The Cost Of Ecology
February 25th 2008 17:43
Years ago when I was an avid herpetologist, I had a variety of reptiles and amphibians. I found that breeding them is fairly easy and the success rate is high with today's technology and know-how.
Most animals come with laws that vary by state or location. Tiger Salamanders and all salamanders of the genus Ambystoma are protected in my state. This status applies to ALL Ambystoma or mole salamanders, including the spotted which is abundant. I argued this point with a few state DEC officers at reptile shows. I think it's ridiculous because it is not like if you buy Tiger Salamanders you are getting them fron NYS, nor disrupting the protected LI species.
This brings us to another point of having to re-route a road because of a colony of rare newts. Of course it will cost a lot more than planned. Seems ashame that you can't elevate the road or move the newts to another environment down the road that would cost less to build.
