The Corregidor Adventure
It was six o' clock in the morning of a beautiful, sunny Saturday. My wife and I were set to visit the historic island of Corregidor. We were to board a Sun Cruise ferry, which would sail across the Manila Bay to reach the beautiful island.
We were both excited! After all, it was my beloved's birthday...
But before this, we can't help but to take a glimpse of the Manila Bay and the attractive floating Casino and restaurant. The sceneries were great. It gave us a taste of the things and sites ahead of us...
The Manila Bay and the Floating Casino/ Restaurant
Sailing took about an hour. It was a smooth journey. We enjoyed the sights of fishermen throwing their net across the vast sea. We saw small fishes jumping, as if having fun with us, escorting our ferry for a safe journey.
And one of the best things we enjoyed on the journey was reminiscing the history of the island, as it was being narrated by our guide.
A Brief History of Corregidor
Corregidor, aka "the Rock", is a small rocky island which is 48 km west of Manila. As they say, it is an island of valor, peace, and international understanding. This island fortress was a symbol of courage and heroism for the Filipino and American soldiers who stood their ground to defend the Philippines against the oppressive and overwhelming Japanese forces during World War II.
Corregidor became one of the headquarters of the Allied Forces and the seat of the Philippine Government during those times. With its big guns and solid hills, it became a witness to some of the crucial battles that gave the freedom my country is experiencing at present.
We were thankful we shall be part of history! It was a tempting offer. For a price of Php 8,000 each, we will be able to stay for two days and one night in a classy hotel atop one of the hills of the island.
The Experience
Day 1
The island tour gave us the privilege to visit and enjoy the shrines and the sight of nature.
How sweet!
The foods on that island were really great. Everytime we ate, the island always seems to be filled with fruits and vegetables and seafood delights. FIESTA is in the atmosphere.
With the kindest of the kind tour guides we were able to see the sun set at the highest point of the island. It was a romantic view.
And when the night arrived, we got to visit a very, very unforgettable place. Coud you believe that within those hills are tunnels that served as headquarters and some portions servbed as a 1000 bed capacity hospital? Wow!
And even scary, we were tripping the dark tunnels only with our helmets and flashights, considering very poor ventilation, inadequate vertical clearance, and very stiff scaffoldings.
But upon returning to the hotel, we spent the night comfortably in our spacious room while enjoying the spa room services. ASTIG!
Day 2
Sun rise was just as beautiful as the sun set. We were proud to have witnessed both.
Hearty breakfast and lunch await you still even in our last day of stay.
Breakfast at the Veranda of the Hotel
We went on souvenir shopping. And the rest of the day we spent swimming on the beach.
Haay... I still have lots to say about this tour. But of course the rest I have to confine to myself and my wife.
