The Chosen Mom

- I’m sorry mum?
- I wanted to be a dancer.
- Really? Ballet like I did?
- Nope. A Cabaret dancer.
I can’t really tell where mom got the idea from, especially in the sixties. Where would she have seen such a dancer to decide being one? My grandfather was very strict about some things and would never allow a daughter to be a Cabaret dancer. But he was farsighted because he wanted his daughters to study and be independent. That is how my mother became a physicist, a researcher known in Brazil and abroad. I’m even planning to write an article about her at Wikipedia.
I’ll never forget our family lunches. We only spoke about nice stuff and mom sometimes decided to explain about her work. We always looked as if we were getting all she said, but it was pure pretence. From those years I can put all that I remember in a few words: quantum dots, gaps, pressure cells, nanotubes, superconductors, diamond layer, laser and cryogeny.
The other day I googled her (as in searched for her name in Google). I got ELEVEN pages of results! And they were all really about her, not other people with similar names. When we get older we tend to display the same kind of proud for our parents as they usually displayed toward us.
I tend to think that as a Cabaret dancer she would have even more references! She started dancing with 38 years old. We had classes together and even were on stage side by side. She was over the moon after a performance when she heard a lady saying to a friend:
- Did you see those girls in green? So good! None of them older than 18!
Only mommy and she was really happy. When I was in Brazil a few months ago we went to a dance academy where they teach forró. She still attends their classes. One of the teachers was nice to say to her:
- Now I know why your daughter is such a good dancer! It comes from you!
Look at the dancers' feet, Mum & Me look exactly the same. We didn't know my sister was taking the picture!
My hero, my mom is today a retired physicist, swimmer in comps and dancer for fun. She is indestructible and much loved. I would choose my mother over all others in the world, wouldn’t you choose yours?
