The Brain and the Computer
October 12th 2006 11:02
I said I'd tell you a little about the Brain to-day, but, first, let us compare
the Brain with the Computer in fairly simple terms.
The language of the computer which tells it how to work is based on two numbers, this is known as a binary system, and tells the computer "on" or "off"
Similarly, with the brain, it is either transmitting information or not, so its parts are variously "on" or "off"
The computer uses electrical energy and the brain uses chemical energy as well as electrical energy.
In the brain the electrical transmission of information acts at high speed. In the computer the speed is incredibly high and that's why the computer can make calculations so fast and use the information it comes up with sorted in a rigidly convenient way.
The computer, however, cannot diverge from its written instructions, it has no mind of its own.
The mind of a person (or animal) is separated from the brain and its workings puzzle many famous scientists and researchers.
If we put the image I have shown in front of a computer it will only see what it is told to see. If we put the image in front of man, woman or child each will come up with their own ideas. Some of those ideas may be similar, others completely different.
The computer's memory consists of computer chips, the brain's memory depends on synapses between various neurons.
Both can learn but in different incompatible ways. Both have evolved over time.
The brain needs nutrients and oxygen and glucose for its function, the computer needs only electricity. The two rely on energy, the brain - chemical, the computer - electrical.
Even when we sleep the brain needs to work otherwise we die, computers can be turned off permanently then resurrected from the "dead" simply by turning them on at an electrical source.
Of course, this is just all too easy but at the same time too difficult but just as Rome was not built in a day, my Blogs will need to be built over time.
That's just a little to get your neurons working, increasing those vital connections to compensate for the brain's natural deterioration over time.
So, I guess it's now time to make the initial first attempts at giving a very small introduction to the brain and giving an idea of what the neurons and their connections are all about.
The brain of man weighs about 1400 g and consists of two cerebral hemispheres joined by a thick band known as the corpus callosum.
Generally, the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and the right side of the brain controls the left side.
There are various areas of the brain that relate specifically to different functions.
Within the brain there are neurons, which are collections of cell bodies of nerves and cell processes which transmit signals between neurons.
As we age deposits of such things as cholesterol can block transmission of signals resulting in memory loss and deterioration of brain function.
Current thinking suggests that encouraging new growth of processes by trying new things as well as some other basic requirements can help compensate by allowing signals to travel around these blockages and thus maintain a better functional level.
The use of Computer Art and the acquisition of computer skills are ways that I am promoting to encourage these compensatory transmissions.
This is just a brief introduction to what katyzzz blog is all about.
For the time being look at the images and let the mind perceive.
Other than guessing what everyone needs to know it would be useful if readers would let me know what questions they would like answered.
It's always just a little progress as we go.

Here are my thoughts in chronological order as I stare at the image.
1. Why don’t you just buy a container to put your pencils in, instead of leaving them dangling in mid-air?
2. Doctor Who drew this picture.
3. Bob Geldorf drew it, then decided to write a song instead: ‘Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Mondays’. (Being a one-hit wonder leads to knighthood?).
4. It’s a picture of Charles Darwin’s brain at the time he was formulating his Theory of Evolution.
5. It’s the drawing that the Commonwealth Bank and Telstra both rejected for their respective logos.
6. Don’t panic when you get your next gold Amex Card. It’s not a joke.
7. Stop breast feeding your child and be prepared to suffer the consequences.
8. Hide your drugs in your pencil holder. Even the police won’t think of looking for them there.
9. Big Brother is still watching you.
10. Some souls are precariously close to dropping off this planet into a place they really don’t want to go. Only mercy is preventing this.

Mice brains, hmmm, that's good, yours or mine?
Mice are good at mazes and finding their way around the computer should be a breeze for them but,
you don't remember, that's a worry isn't it? Get onto doing Computer Art pronto and I'll be putting on
some recommendation for delaying dementia and maintaining brain function from the Mayo Clinic, very
shortly, providing I haven't lost them.
But, you got it. Something good has to be going on in there, but come on, declare yourself.
Still, I have just said in my current post on conversation in the family that anonymous comments will
do just fine, so, I guess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pity about that, I love a good fight.
See if Homer can do anything to encourage you, you're wise to protect yourself against ridicule, and
Homer Joyce is his real name, isn't it? katyzzz, I'm having the rest of the day off, how about you?
You'll love my last picture, can't make any sense of it at all.

You ar always good value and I have wondered what you've been up to?
I'm really surprised you've been playing with paint.
Don't worry, I feel sure no-one has been impersonating you. How could they?
You stand alone, like a beacon, a lightouse guiding all to your shores.
Did you see the little surprise I left you on dancing on balloons?
I'll have to do some balloons for you some time, they're awfully hard, they have to look like what they
actually are.

there are people in life who can influence others...
I'm pretty resistant to influence ... (What's that saying? When an irresistable force meets an immovable object?) ... but there was something about the reality of your posts that influenced me to give MS Paint a go ...
If I end up in a mental institution again ... sitting on the floor with my crayons going ... katy katy katy z katy katy with all the zées ... I'll blame ...
Oh, shit, I won't be able to blame anyone, will I ... they'll lobotomise me ...
Do you know the Nat King Cole song 'Unforgettable'? ... I like to sing it with my own lyrics ... 'Incorrigible that's what you are ... '

Thanks,
I've never received virtual balloons before ...
I'm afraid I'm getting a bit addicted to MS Paint ... I can't resist putting images with my posts ... (at least there are no copyright issues ...) ...
Thanks also for your advice on how to increase the colour palate ... it was a bit frustrating before that ...

Do send us some seeable art, virtual you call it, I call it real if a little surreal!
Have they locked you up yet? You'll love it in there, where do you think I learned and just think of all
those famous people who preceded you and ought to have preceded you.

This is just to help with your physics, I must look for those images, perhaps it's my eyesight, you don't think it is my mind or memory do yo?
One can't help worrying about these things, especially when you can't find them!
Where have all the flowers gone, ....long time passing....someone else do the music please!
