The boat people issue

December 10th 2011 01:58
Before having someone live at your house, there are things you must have in place. For instance you must have a room available. You need to make sure you can trust the person staying there. After all its no good having someone at your place if things start going missing.

Here is another thing to consider: Lets say a boat full of people show up on our shores. The boat has say 45 people crowded on it. We accept them and let them stay in our country. Next week we will have two boat loads of refugees seeking asylum in our country. The following week we will have 10 boats. The week after 30 boats, and it will keep on growing.

The current Prime Minister and her counterparts are suffering a very serious problem. They must be asking themselves: How do we become more like the liberal party, without actually becoming the liberal party?

Say what you want about John Howard's reign, but he kept the boats from coming.

Sadly without some form of immigration many industries in this country would simply collapse. So what is the solution? My solution is tempered with both harshness and compassion. The solution is very simple. First we work out how many people we can take in as a country. This would be a realistic assessment done by the Bureau of Statistics and Sustainable Growth. The final number would take into account following: how many people realistically this country can support, our current birth rate, how many people we already have living here. The final number left, let say, 4000000*, would be how many people we let into the country for the year. We have one big intake each year, then we shut our borders to any immigration for twelve months. We would do this at different times of the year. This would stop waves of boats camping on our shores.

All these people who believe we should just let anyone in to the country regardless of how much resources we can spare should take this into account: If anyone believes that our approach to asylum seekers should be one of open charity, then I believe these people should be responsible for finding them homes. In fact I think the same people should be made to find a room in their own home for the asylum seekers.

*footnote. I don't know how many people we can let in. I don't work for the statistics department. I'm plucking figures from the air.
