The Birther Rebellion, or How They Learned to Hate the President

July 28th 2009 23:09
I wanted to stay out of it with all the fibers of my being. Let them continue to blow hard for a while and they'll deflate themselves, I thought. And yet this debate (can it even be called that?) drags on. Yes, I speak of the birther movement - too stupid even to capitalize. Can you believe this? I am certainly surprised that anyone, anywhere believes that this movement has merit. First, though, a brief overview.

The movement began during the 2008 election and has, for some strange reason continued to this day. There are a few permutations of the story, but all forms allege that President Obama was never eligible for the presidency according to the rules of the U.S. Constitution, Article II.
First story: Barack Obama was born in Kenya.
Second story: Barack Obama was born in Indonesia
Third story: Barack Obama was born with dual citizenship, and therefore ineligible for the Presidency

Now, I've heard the accusations and all the refutations of them. But I'm ready to take the long view. Here's my question: if any of these accusations are true, then what the hell is the point, anyway? Are these people worried about Obama being some sort of Manchurian Candidate? To what end would all of this subterfuge be performed? And if this this all as elaborate a ruse as the birthers claim, than how could the plotters of this plot be so stupid as to tip anyone off?

Tell me what you think about this whole deal and tell me if I should even be discussing this nonsense.

How sad that when the first President who does not fit the mold of older white guy comes along, the nutty fringe has to deny his American-ness. Is it really too much for them to bear that their leader is not in their physical image? Can they not accept that not all Americans are white? Or have both parents born somewhere in the mid west?

I call them the nutty fringe because that's what they should be known as. Unfortunately, what should be extreme views are fairly common in America. But only on the Right.

I couldn't agree more, Ruby. This issue could only come out of the extreme right wing demographic. Unfortunately, much of that demographic is on television and radio.
