The Big Gay Musical (2009)
September 9th 2010 08:58
In the opening sequence to The Big Gay Musical, a patron at a small straight play, stands up and leaves the theatre. When questioned by the usher if there's anything he needs he turns to the camera and cries, "I need a musical, A Big Gay Musical." And boy does he get what he's looking for in the film that follows.
Written by Fred M Caruso, and directed by Casper Andreas and Fred M Caruso, The Big Gay Musical is an unapologetic gay musical romp that boasts a cast of some of Broadways' biggest and brightest talent.
Telling the story of Paul (Daniel Robinson) and Eddie (Joey Dudding) as they prepare for previews of their off broadway run of Adam & Steve the way God Made Them, A Big Gay Musical is light-hearted, fun and has a killer showtune soundtrack.
Told in two parts - Paul and Eddies lives and the staged production of Adam & Steve - A Big Gay Musical focuses on the lives and struggles to accept themselves as they are, of it's leading men. Eddie, born into a Southern Baptist family and still living his life in the closet, and the free spirited Paul, who searches only for love.
As the film progresses, Paul tries his hand at being a slut - leading to a great song - only to find it's really not for him, and Eddie comes out to his parents - after finding out their coming to New York for his Off Broadway debut - loses his virginity and both leading men, find within themselves a sense of happiness and hope they didn't think existed.
The Big Gay Musical is a lot of fun. I heard of the film via a Facebook Group invitation someone on my friendslist sent me and after watching it realised it's one of those special films that come along so rarely, one that is worth watching over and over again.
The cast is fantastic, and you feel your being given a special priviledge in being allowed to join in on their journey. Cameo's by the films writer and director - Casper Andreas is the usher I mentioned & Fred M Caruso is one of the patrons at Suddenly Sondheim - and a supporting cast made up of extremely talented and entertaining characters makes The Big Gay Musical a must own for anyone with a GLBT DVD collection.
Not only is the film exceptional, the soundtrack is a riot. There are so many wonderful songs included I dare you not to wander through your day humming them to yourself. I'm sure I'm driving my neighbours nuts by singing I'm Gonna Go Straight To Heaven as I clean up under the house. Eve's Lament, the big broadway showstopper at the end of the first Act of Adam & Steve is fantastic, as are all of the songs.
I really can't recommend this movie highly enough, and I read somewhere - Twitter I think although I could be wrong - that a sequel is in the works, and I have to admit, I can't wait.
