Rocketdock (LINK)

I must say, how I lived without Rocketdock, I don't know. For years all of my computers have been a hideos desktop filled up with garbage. Odds are a few of you probably still have that "Free iTunes" icon that comes preinstalled on tons of computers these days.

My friends over on the Bethesda message boards posted their desktops and lo and behold! Rocketdock. This allows you to get all of those shortcuts off of your desktop and put them into a sidebar that you can hide or keep visible. Apparently Macs have had this for years.

If you have a cluttered desktop, check out Rocketdock. It's awesome.

Warning: Do NOT delete something after you have put it on your Rocketdock. Rocketdock is merely a holder for shortcuts. If the original file is moved or deleted, it will not work and you will have to put it on Rocketdock again.

Nod32 (LINK)

July 5th 2008 20:21
Nod32 is antivirus software created by ESET. When it comes to paid antivirus software, Nod32 is one of the very best on the market. This software used to be used only by those who were pretty skilled with computers as the interface was kind of a pain in the but for novice users.

The newest version (3.0) has really improved upon the old interface so it should appeal to many more people. Nod32 typically blows away the common antivirus software that most people get with a new computer such as Norton and McAfee because it is is extremely thorough, is updated daily, and has wonderful tech support if you need it.

Nod32 costs $39.99 and is well worth the price if you want comprehensive antivirus protection. It may cost more than some other programs but it's hard to find anything better.

Try the 30-day free trial and you won't be disappointed.

AVG Antivirus (LINK)

July 1st 2008 15:54
AVG Antivirus is free antivirus software created by Grisoft. Like other free antivirus software, you only get a limited amount of features but you can upgrade to the complete edition for less than $50.

AVG Antivirus is good as it catches all types of viruses that might infect your computer. The free edition doesn't come with internet security, spyware detection, or a firewall so it might leave a little bit to be desired.

I tested out AVG for about 3 months and I thought it was just fine. My wife, however, hated it. It seemed to enjoy blocking her Internet Explorer and a couple of online games she likes on a regular basis.

I recommend trying this product before you try any others just to see if you like it. It caused some frustration around my house so we eventually settled for a paid antivirus program instead.

Avast! Antivirus (LINK)

Avast! Antivirus is my favorite completely free anti-virus software. This software will keep your computer running well and even comes with anti-spyware built in. Avast! is a great choice for those who don't want to pay for antivirus software but want great protection. I've downloaded weird things on purpose just to see if Avast! catches it, and it does every single time.

I highly recommend this product and it's the right price. FREE

There are tons of anti-virus software makers out there and they range in popularity from the well known to the unknown. I like to try things out when they are pretty new and like an idiot, I abandoned my free anti-virus software to try my first PAID software.

Why did I choose Custodia Antivirus? Well, to put it simply, I'm cheap and a friend had it installed

Anti-Virus Software: What is it?

June 24th 2008 03:02
Anti-Virus software is designed to help your computer identify software or programs that are potentially harmful.

Anti-virus software should identify and remove viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, and other harmful software and programs. Good anti-virus software should catch almost all potentially harmful items before you use or install them
