The Blog Formerly Known As Saturday Morning Movie Club - by Lizard68591

My Rating System - I won't be using thumbs or stars or any of the other already taken [and may I say unoriginal] symbols. Instead my affinity for a film [or lack thereof] will be illustrated by clocks. Strange perhaps, but also practical. When you see as many movies as I do you end up seeing a significant amount of crap. The crappier the movie the more times I find myself checking the time. So here's the deal...there will be a scale from zero to 5. For those who have yet figured it out a rating of 5 clocks will be awarded to such horrific Hollywood debacles as Steven Spielberg's A.I. and zero stars will be reserved only for those movies that rise to the level of this summer's Little Miss Sunshine.

The Big Chill - 2 Clocks

October 21st 2006 23:56
As I watched The Big Chill I couldn’t stop thinking that it was The Breakfast Club for my parents generation – A coming of age story set to a soundtrack that defined a generation. Sure there are a few differences. Instead of the princess, the athlete, the brain, the criminal and the basket-case there was the movie star, the drug addict, the lonely sole, the sex obsessed pig, the businessman and the bored housewife. But they are essentially the same tale.

Both movies tell the story of a group of people who despite their obvious differences are able to relate to one another because they share something. In The Breakfast Club it was a common enemy and in The Big Chill it was a common grief, but in both movies the result was the same. That one common bond allowed a group of people, whose paths would never cross out in the real world come together and find friendship and comfort in one another.

The Big Chill shows its audience that some bonds are unbreakable and even the most different people can always find some common ground. But I think my favorite part of the movie was how, despite its depressing undertone, it managed to make me laugh. And isn’t that what life is all about…learning to laugh even at the most dismal of times.
