The Best is Yet to Come

Hine and I had been exchanging letters. One Christmas we took all our children, a chaperone and headed north. We took both cars and drove until I was too tired to drive any more. The kids had walkie-talkies to keep in contact as back then cell phones were not so common and prescriptions were still free.
I remember parking beside the road. Being too tired to pitch the tent, we spread it out on the ground and instantly fell asleep. When waking in the morning we were on a deserted beach. A gentle breeze was blowing and did not have a clue where we were.
An old man was beachcombing, we asked him for directions to ninety-mile beach. I remember his reply to be something like this. You are standing in the middle of it. This is now a classic family joke that will not go away no matter how hard we try.
During this time, our children bonded and our family started to meld. The problems began with her children and me and then my children and Hine. Step parenting is never easy and it is only something that we can take one day at a time. The experts say that whatever ages the children are when you come into the marriage that is how long it will take.
In my own experience, I am inclined to agree with this. Some of Hine’s children were in their twenties when we got married. We have now been together 22 years. Some of her kids are just starting to come around. To be honest though a couple of them are in relationships where they have their own set of stepchildren. The saying that you reap what you sow is very prevalent.
Hine and I soon decided on a date to be married. The 10th of September is her spiritual birthday. My natural birthday is the sixth. Sometimes Fathers Day falls in between. We began to pray and ask the Lord what kind of service we should have. Where are we going to live? Then we called a meeting of our friends to tell them how it was going to happen.
My idea had always been a quiet wedding. My wife to be, Hine had other ideas.
