The Best and Worst of the Oscars
March 9th 2010 02:58
It's that time of the year again. The time when we all sit back and heckle celebrities on their choice of clothing for the Academy Awards. This journalist laments style choices chosen by those that can afford to dress well (and anyone that was with me last night during the Red Carpet coverage can attest to my strong feelings on this matter). What are we looking forward to? Lots of shiny gowns, too tight bodices, one beauty pageant mishap, and a loofah sponge come to life. We begin with the worst (because we can only go up from here).
THE WORST- in no particular order
MILEY CYRUS
I know, I know. People are going to be all over my case for hating on Miley. All I am saying is that when you have to slouch over so your boobs don't pop out of a gown, and said gown shows your stomach rolls- it's time to go up a size. No shame, and you'd probably have looked better sweetheart. In other news, the color was lovely on her. I wonder if she and Amanda Seyfried coordinated when they presented for their "SIlver and Gold" theme.
CAREY MULLIGAN
The shoes combined with that hem killed me. That's all.
ZOE SALDANA
Her hair and makeup were beautiful, and she's so gorgeous in reality, so I was really pissed off that girlfriend chose a gown that exploded into a tie-dyed loofah at the bottom. It was A LOT of dress.
CHARLIZE THERON
Did anyone else scream rosette boobs when she came onto the screen??? What most didn't see was said rosettes swept around the back of the bodice to form a beauty-pageantesque sash. Plus, and call me picky, her lipstick clashed. For someone so elegant, she really took a digger on this one.
KATE WINSLET
Boring color. Looked like a grandma. Nothing exciting. Yawn.
MAGGIE G
It was a tie-dyed monstrosity and looked super super awful. However, at least it fit her.
and now....
THE BEST
SANDRA BULLOCK
I know, she probably got the dress to match the award, but have we seen that much old Hollywood glamour lately??????????!!!!! Get excited ya'll.
CAMERON DIAZ
When I spoke with some readers last night, I was a little frustrated with her hair. However, once having a nights sleep under my snakeskin belt, I realized that I loved the color, the silhouette, and her makeup. I still think the hair could have been a little less "Hello Dolly" but I'll take what I can get.
TINA FEY
I know what you're thinking... Are you ON something??? Well, in lieu of my recent surgery (which kept me from all you darlings), I can YES!
But I actually loved this gown. Now, would I rather the top NOT be assymetrical- YES. Would I rather the midsection not to have some weird fitted thing, and instead be a slimming body hugging silhouette- YES. But overall, I think we should all give some mad props to Ms. Fey for trying something different, and still coming off classy.
THE STREEP
Ivory. Plunging neckline. Curve-hugging. DELICIOUS. "THAT's ALL"
RACHEL McADAMS
WORE A PRINT! TO THE OSCARS!!!! While I, and all of those in Sartorialista HQ love her hair down more, wearing it up with this dress- WORKED. Plus, the print was an amalgamation of the colors that work best with her skin, and blended together in a kicky fit to look stunning. Would I have preferred her to wear an interesting cuff or bracelet- probably. Bravo! BTW, Jake G saying you're the "future mother of his kids" is too cute. And in the words of one of my friends (as spoken when Rachel hit the screen) "Hubbahubbahubba."
P. CRUZ
Okay, I love this woman. Total girl crush. EVERY year at the Oscars she gives us something to look forward to. She WORE color. She WORE the hell outta that gown. It was architecturally interesting, a fun color, and she looked fabulous. P.S. anyone who can look fab against Marion Cotillard in a movie in which she plays a mistress has my vote any day. WORKKKKKKK!
and finally
GABBY SIDIBE
When she crossed the red carpet, my reaction literally made my husband scared. I started screaming and crying in joy. Girlfriend looked incredible!!!! Now I have no idea who dressed her, but that shade of blue, with those strategic embellishments, and the cut and drape made me stand and applaud. It is ABOUT TIME that a plus-sized female readily embraces curves in the way they should!!! Gabby looked stunning and her hair and makeup were perfection. I don't know her, but I was so happy for her!!!! She really is Hollywood's Cinderella story, and anyone who can fist bump Keanu Reeves, and then yell that "It's just like prom!!!" has my vote. Like all other fashion writers today, I want to invite girlfriend over for a drink to dish. Come on over Gabby, I'll make margaritas!!!!
THE "EH" CATEGORY
SJP- I don't care if it is Chanel Couture. I don't have to like it.
ANNA KENDRICK- I love her, but hated the color on her.
GEORGE CLOONEY- seriously, cheer up baby.
ANY DUDE WHO WORE A WHITE POCKET SQUARE- seriously, if it's a classic tux, wear a black one, or match to that fabulous color I know is lining your coat.
OPRAH- It was nice. It was elegant. It was safe.
HELEN MIRREN- I kinda liked it. I kinda didn't. Do I still want to be her when I grow up? HELL YES.
I also want to give mad props to Chris March, from Project Runway fame for dressing THE STREEP this awards season, and making her look so elegant and beautiful. Congrats Mr. March. You warm my cold, fashion-loving heart.
