The beauty of the canefields
August 11th 2009 09:10
For those who are committed readers to this blog you will be very aware that our new home-to-be is surrounded by canefields in the Northern NSW area.
Since the rental we are living in got sold and we had to move, we have been lucky enough to live in the basement of Mark's cousins' place only two doors down from where we are building, so I have been able to watch the progress more avidly (especially as I work from home quite a few days of the week).
It was last Saturday night and I had just gotten off the phone from my parents when hubby went out to investigate a loud noise outside. Next thing he is yelling very excitedly for me to 'come and have a look'. I raced out to see what was wrong and the sight that met me was wondrous!
The canefields were all alight!
Even though there has been a big push for cane farmers to 'green' cut their crops for environmental purposes, there have been many issues with the mill up here meaning that processing has gotten badly backed up in previous seasons. Since the beginning of this cane harvesting season this year many farmers have just gone ahead and burnt their crops as normal.
I am no greenie by any stretch of the imagination. I recycle and I turn off extra lighting. I never litter and am planning to have a compost heap in our backyard, but I am an agnostic in the environmental church of 'greenness' ie. doing the Christmas and Easter thing as far as everything sustainable goes.
For this reason I was delighted to see the cane fire we saw tonight. It was an awesome and beautiful sight and I am hoping to see many more.
