The Auction
The sound of the a phone ringing shook Tobias out of his drunken slumber, his eyes trying to focus as he started to recall events from earlier that day. Reaching over to the bedside table, he picked up the receiver ‘Tobias Deveer speaking’.
‘Good evening Mr Deveer, this is your call to inform you that the auction starts at 7.30pm’ the female voice told him.
‘Thank you’ he replied as he rolled onto his back, letting the phone drop onto the floor.
He felt someone stir next to him and saw that it was the woman he had meet at the bar last night. ‘Had he really been in bed all day?’ He thought to himself before noticing the empty champagne bottles and scattered clothing lying around the hotel room. He gave a smile when he saw her leopard skin g-string lying torn on the floor, remembering how he had removed it.
‘Do you feel like some more?’ a soft seductive voice asked, whispering into his ear as the woman placed her arms around his chest.
Tobias turned and looked at Melina, almost captivated by her beauty, almost perfect skin, those deep dark eyes that seemed to draw in your very soul.
‘I would love to but the auction starts soon and I can’t afford to miss the item’ he replied slowly as he gazed into her eyes light a moth drawn to the flame.
‘Ah yes we wouldn’t want you to miss that’ she replied softly, with a knowing smile.
‘I will meet you downstairs then’ she told him before putting on his dressing gown, collecting her clothes and opened the door to the hallway closing it with a click behind her.
Tobias showered and got changed into his evening suit before going downstairs. As he walked past the hotel lobby, he saw it was snowing hard, pretty much blizzard conditions so he doubted that he would be able to leave later that evening.
Upon entering the ballroom, Melina excused herself from the gentleman she had been talking too and headed straight for him, linking her arm through his.
Once again Tobias was dazzled by her beauty, she wore a long black evening dress but it was the gold necklace that she wore that caught his attention for it looked almost Egyptian in appearance.
‘ That’s stunning’ he said to her.
‘It was a gift from a friend a long time ago’ she replied almost absently as if she was reliving that time.
Just then an announcement was made saying that the auction would start shortly.
Everyone got themselves seated but glancing around Tobias noticed that there wasn’t as many people there as he first thought and they all seemed to know one another.
He had caught some of them giving him strange glances but then one look from Melina had made them look away quickly.
He was about to ask a question but she just put a finger to her lips before pressing it softly against his own lips, feeling a shudder run down his spine from her touch.
Then the auction started, there was only one item for sale, a rare 13th diamond navel ring, that had actually been taken off Joan of Arc before she had been burned at the stake in 1431, passing through the procession of many kings and queens throughout
the ages.
‘Bidding will be intense for this’ Melina whispered to him ’But I want it back’ she said with a knowing smile.
Tobias looked at her strangely, not knowing what she had meant by that comment and was about to ask, when she gave a nod her head to the auctioneer at the price of $200,000 US.
‘She has got to be kidding!’ He thought in amazement to himself, watching quietly as the price jumped $50,000 a bid. Tobias had wanted to bid for this item, to be the prize of his collection of items having belonged to Joan of Arc but the price was way over the top at $500,000.
‘Do I here any more bids at $550,000?’ The auctioneer asked to the hushed crowd.
‘Going once, twice, sold to Miss Cranaoj’ the man said as everyone in the room applauded as Melina walked to the podium.
‘You have exquisite taste madam’ the auctioneer said handing over the small but very old tattered velvet box that held the naval ring.
‘Payment as usual from my swiss account, Maurice’ she replied placing the small box into her evening purse before stepping down from the stage and rejoining Tobias.
‘I don’t think you made some people very happy’ Tobias said with a slight worried tone at some of the looks they were getting from a group of heavy set looking gentlemen.
‘They should have paid more then’ she replied with a disinterested shrug.
‘I think you should put that straight into the hotel safe, just in case they tried something’ he told her.
‘She gave a slight laugh, ‘You worry too much’ she said before slipping her arm through his and giving him a soft kiss upon the cheek.
Let’s go back to your room as spending all this money has given me quite an appetite’ she whispered softly into his ear.
‘I could order some food’ he replied.
‘That’s not what I had in mind’ she said leading towards the lifts.
Closing the door behind them, she took off his jacket, throwing it onto the floor before starting to undo his shirt, button by button.
‘You know I have to ask, but where are you from as your last name Cranaoj is very unusual’ Tobias asked as they moved closer to the bed.
‘It’s Russian’ she replied pushing him backwards onto the mattress.
Just then there was a knock on the door and a voice called out ‘Complimentary bottle of champagne, courtesy of the management’.
‘You just lie there Melina, I’ll get this for you’ Tobias said moving towards the door.
‘Coming’ he said as he took hold of the handle and opened it.
His face registering surprise at the three large men standing there.
He tried to slam the door but they were quicker, with one of the burly men giving him a quick punch to the head as they all entered, closing the door behind them and blocking off the only escape route.
As they saw Melina standing there half dressed, one of them said ‘Looks like we are going to have fun tonight boys’ as he moved closer towards her.
‘But first we want it!’ he demanded ,holding his hand out for the small velvet box.
‘I’m sure you do’ Melina said in a soft seductive tone as she ran her fingers lightly over the mans outstretched palm.
‘Enough games’ he snapped angrily, grasping her hand and pulling her closer to him.
He thought it was strange when she didn’t cry out at the pressure he was crushing her hand with but it was when she started to crush his that surprise and shock showed upon his face.
