the 90's theme party
February 5th 2008 01:28
Ok so Tim is having a 90's themed party this friday night. Usually im so excited about dress up parties, a chance to whore it up without being a whore.
This time i was stumped.
The 90's? hmmm
i've got nothing. i complained to him. he did not budge so i decided like a good nerd i would get on the net and see what there was to know about the decade that was most pivotal in my childhood development. hello i grew up in the 90's yet not one thing has stuck in my mind.
so this really struck me. i have learned about every decade since the birth of christ. no kidding i can tell you all about the roman empire, the caliphates of the early centuries and the bombing of pearl harbour in 1941. i can tell you about the post structuralists that influenced post moderists of the 80's. ask me about the 90's though and i draw a blank.
the invitation to Tim's party included a few pics of stuff like the spice girls (who were unfortunatly my style icons throughout primary school), Titanic and forrest gump. were these the revolutions of the decade which has not been etched to my memory?
why is it that such a period of time can be forgotton. not only by me but by, it seems, history.
i take a sigh of relief when i think of Nirvana and that revolution, of Seinfeld, of us winning the olympics.
then i think of the gulf war and the hobart massacre and i get all sad. i think of the AIDS epidemic and the Clinton thing, i think of john howard being elected. i think of Rwanda and East Temor. i get all sad.
maybe we forget the 90's because we know to much about them. the mass media went crazy and the internet, the digital image and the mobile phones took over our lives. we were overwhelmed by information so we built blockades. we had all the knowledge of all teh ages yet we decided to hibernate. then one day we woke up and the twin towers were destroyed, our best friends were fighting in the war, the envionment was colapsing, and poverty was a theme of concerts.
in the 90's we were bored. we were over the over analyzing of the workaholic post world war two period. we were just into being comfortably numb, just as pink floyd told us we always were. we were over it. complacent
now we are awake and scared. we have opened our eyes to a world more horrible than ever we could have imagined. we have these leaders that are cast as icons. we have movies and music making moresense then the people the run things. we have angry people picketing the streets. could we have done more? can we fix it?
i fell asleep in the 90's becasue the 70's were more interesting.
i fell asleep in the 90's becasue it was too scary to be awake.
does it seem simplistic? maybe.
i still do not know what to wear.....
