The 4400 - an awesome TV series

January 30th 2008 02:16
"Our future will be fought in the past" - sounds like a tag line for global warming

If you are wondering what I am talking about its a (not so new) Sci-fi TV Series made in British Columbia called the 4400 and can I say it's excellent!

The premise: 4400 people have been abducted at different times from the earth over the past 60 years. All of them are returned to a single place in the present, all at once. None of them have aged a day since they disappeared, and none of them can remember anything about where they were taken. Some of them have returned with extra-ordinary abilities, so the rest of the human population becomes extremely wary of them, especially the US Government (of course). A specialist group (NTAC) is setup to help and figure out what happened to the 4400.

I have watched up to the end of the 3rd Season on DVD, mainly because TV reception where I live in a tropical rainforest is non existent without a satellite dish so my partner and I took to hiring out TV programs from the local DVD store. The 4400 found us. We closed our eyes and picked it off the TV series shelf.

Having been a sci-fi lover for nearly 40 years, my favourite TV Series before this one was X-Files. The 4400 has something else again. The things I love about it are:

A character driven story - rather than a plot driven 'repeated each week' pile of nonsense.
Each week is different thought the characters we meet are involved in the "overall" story.
It asks some very real questions about the world today and the state it's in.
It has some of the best TV Series writing - in terms of ideas and story lines and how creative and messed up some of the episodes are - they really put your mind in a spin!

I'm sure there are people in here who have seen the whole series to date. I wanted to post this to encourage ANY SCI-FI X-Files fans who haven't seen this program to get it out on DVD and watch it from the pilot. It's great too because on DVD there isn't any advertisements ;o)

If you could have an amazing ability - what would yours be? And would you use it to benefit mankind?

The 4400 - I highly recommend it!!!

Count me as a fan of 4400 too "Dances with Words",

I just finished Season 4 on DVD and the story widens into quite interesting avenues.

Heroes owes a lot to this show, Season 2 of 4400 is dealing with many of the same issues in a way mimicked later by the Kring joy.

A fun sci-fi soap opera to be sure.
