In a major terror strike, 42 persons were killed and about 50 injured in a string of blasts at a crowded park and a popular eating joint in the Southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Saturday evening. The first series of explosions occurred in a public park ,the Lumbini Park, near the state secretariat and the other series of blasts took place at a popular eatery in the busy Kothi area. The injured were being treated at several hospitals in Hyderabad. the condition of at least 10 was said to be serious. Two unexploded bombs were recovered hours after the blasts - one at Mosarambagh and another at Dilsukhnagar.. So powerful was the blast that some of bodies were flung into the air and scattered over the area.Hyderabad Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh said the toll at Lumbini Park may go up as it was teeming with week-end crowd.According to the Police the bombs were all attached to timers and evidence collected so far indicated that it was a well-planned terrorist operation.
No outfit has claimed responsibility for the blasts, but intelligence sources said they bore the handiwork of a Bangladesh-based Islamic militant group known as the Harkat-ul Jehad-i-Islami.The group, led by Mohammed Abdul Shahid alias Bilal, was also believed to be responsible for the blasts at the Mecca mosque in Hyderabad in May.
Hyderabad, with a large Muslim population, has a history of sectarian violence between Hindus and Muslims and the authorities have stepped up security. The situation in the city remained tense but peaceful on Sunday. Special security measures have been made for over 30,000 weddings scheduled to take place across the state on Sunday, an auspicious day on the local calendar. Security has also been tightened in national capital Delhi, financial hub Mumbai and other major cities following the Hyderabad blasts. Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Y.Rajshekhar Reddy said ,“I deeply mourn the dead in the blasts in Hyderabad today. Both the blasts appear to be the handiwork of anti-national elements. All these casualties are regrettable. The bomb blasts are the cruelest act against humanity. The perpetrators of such acts could have no religion, ideological or national identity. They at best could be described as traitors of humanity.According to preliminary reports, it was a terrorist act."A senior police official said the explosives used in the twin blasts on Satuday were similar to the one used by terrorists in the Mecca Masjid blasts in May 2006..The dead and injured were ferried to Osmania Hospital, Medicity and Yashoda hospital.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed deep concern over the blasts and the Union Home Ministry said it was monitoring the situation in Hyderabad.Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said the blasts were the handiwork of some terrorist group."One terrorist group or the other, which is bent on destroying the unity of the country, is certainly involved in the blasts in Hyderabad,".
Indian government must now wake up from its deep slumber and formulate an effective policy against the terrorists. The Congress government and its Left allies will have to stop appeasment policy.Life of every Indian is precious and the government should stop treating this loss of lives as routine which it has been doing for the last many years.
