Syria still in Disarray

February 11th 2013 14:22
As part of the Arab Spring, Syria was on the brink of change unfortunately President Bashar al-Assad had other plans. The current regime sent in tanks and opened fire on demonstrators starting in 2011 a Civil War that is still going on as we speak. The opposition fighters are made up of military deserters and ordinary people simply fighting for their homes and a better tomorrow. The carnage seems to be occurring before our very eyes, as bodies lay lifeless on the ground in homes and apartments. What complicates the situation more than Tunisia and Egypt is that al-Assad has support from its ally Russia that could lose its own interests in the region if the Syrian government fell. Russia is arming Syria with powerful weapons/missiles allowing this conflict to drag on and on with no end in sight.Your text goes here
One of the U.S. and other Western allies biggest concerns is that if we armed opposition fighters the weapons could go to radical Islamists groups bent on hurting innocent people. The Syrian conflict seems to be a giant chaotic mess and thousands dead and thousands more seeking refuge in neighboring states. The U.S. should try to get food/medical supplies to the citizens who need them and try to get a cease-fire through diplomacy. There seems to be no security or police presence and human rights violations are occurring on a regular basis.
If Western allies donít step in Syria could become radicalized with strict Islamic doctrine that could take away rights of citizens especially women. There is evidence that al-Qaeda is present in Syria so should the U.S. send in Spec Ops soldiers? The strategy is really up in the air at this point and I doubt this conflict will end any time soon. The U.N. Assembly has already condemned al-Assad handling of the situation but Russia and China still are blocking any attempt to help the uprising.
