Colored jeans - Catch the Rainbow!

April 7th 2012 12:45

Bright colors are a hot trend for summer. Wearing bold hues will give you a visual lift. Choose your favorite skittle color and catch the rainbow.

When the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, stepped out in coral skinny jeans, the colored pant trend became undeniable. In fact the sale of colored jeans soared in England after the Duchess' Olympic Park tour wearing bright orange pants. Add to that Kate's famous fashionista sister, Pippa and her bold red jeans, and the rainbow hued denim officially has a royal seal of approval.

Once you catch the rainbow, what do you do with it?

After choosing a pair of pants in your favorite Skittle color, you may be wondering how to wear them. The fact is, colored jeans are not as hard to style as you might first think. Bold colored denim is perfect base for a variety of tops. Play with colorblocking, monochromatic dressing, and neutrals and every combination in between.

Colorblocking halfway done

When your entire bottom half is swathed in bright green, cobalt blue, or fire engine red, you are only one or two items away from a perfectly colorblocked outfit. Consider pairing a bright turquoise blue top with your red denim for nod to the southwestern theme. Add a belt that combines red and turquoise like this one from Charlotte Russe featuring an embellished disk buckle. Colorblocking can be as easy as pairing a contrasting colored t-shirt against your colored denim. Blue pants with a lime green blouse is another good combo.

Monochromatic dressing is simple

Just like all those days when you wore black on black with black shoes because it was simple, combine red with red or blue with blue. Be sure to show some skin or you may be mistaken for an unfortunate Willy Wonka accident. Cobalt blue denim with a matching cobalt blue tank top is a slimming look, especially if paired with a unstructured cardigan, or cropped jacket.

Neutralize the color

If you are going with extra bright pants, you can tone down the overall look with a plain white v-neck t-shirt, a black blazer and black pumps. Add your favorite jewelry to casually complete the outfit. Nude or metallic shoes are a good choice to wear with rainbow colored pants. Gold, silver, pewter or browns can take the hue down a notch without drawing too much attention to themselves.

Hunger Games Fashion-inspiration

March 29th 2012 23:51
Fans of "The Hunger Games" can show their support in style.

You can wear your choices to the premiere or simply incorporate the feeling of Panem into your day-to-day wardrobe.

While you can choose a promotional design such as comfortable "Hunger Games" sweatpants, there are many different fashionable options for the die-hard fan.

The popular young adult trilogy is an addictive blend of action thriller, dystopian horror, star-crossed romance all mixed with Project Runway. If you haven't been hooked as yet, be prepared for graphic violence and plenty of implied social commentary. With that said, it will be interesting to see how the book's detailed imagery will be interpreted on the big screen.

Fashion Inspired by "The Hunger Games"

District 12 Fashion Inspiration
The people of District 12, for the most part, are resilient and loyal to one another. In the novel, this poor district is responsible for coal mining and routinely fight hunger and poverty.

Channel the tough, rugged spirit of Katniss by wearing layers of utilitarian items. These unique Farylrobin leather boots would fit right in especially when paired with muted grays and browns. Make the look yours with bow and arrow themed jewelry. If you want to dress the look up, try a chambray bib shirt dress with a pair of Mary Jane flats are another easy way to give a nod to District 12.

Put a bird on it
While you can find a huge variety of Mockingjay products, any soaring birds will do if you are going for a subtle connection and not all out fanwear. Duck earrings are another simple and subtle way to pay tribute to the moment when Katniss volunteers in place of her sister.

Capitol designs
The Capitol is a hive of debauchery, gluttony and materialism. Contrasted with the rugged simplicity of Katniss, the appearance of Capitol citizens is even more outrageous. While you do not have to go to the extremes outlined in the book, glitzy, glamorous choices are easy to adopt.

Hot pink tank paired with a frilly turquoise skirt or a glittery dress and piles of gleaming bangles will do the trick. Slip into a fascinator and choose the most colorful hues of makeup that you dare. Effie Trinket would approve.

Makeovers at the Capitol
Capture Katniss fiery new look after her makeover by stylist Cinna with red, orange and metallic elements. Try a one shoulder red chiffon blouse with your black skinny jeans, gold heels and jewelry. Using "The Hunger Games" inspiration, you can even wear black earrings to represent the coal mining roots.

Safe and Sound tribute
Taylor Swift's haunting, ethereal song is the perfect accompaniment to "The Hunger Games." It is also a great inspiration for a romantic outfit. While Taylor Swift is shown in a one-of-a-kind vintage gown, you can recreate the look with a lace tank and feminine shorts or skirt. Delicate jewelry that centers around the forest and cemetery setting completes the outfit like this leaf and twig necklace.

Tiny homes are happy homes.

The following is a book review for Tiny Homes- I know this is a fashion blog, but it does relate - in my mind at least.

DIY fashion, stepping outside of the norm, paring it all down to the essentials and making it your very own is what Sylvie a la mode stands for. Check the book out for yourself and see if it doesn't make you want to clean closets

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I couldn't help but smile as I went through the image-heavy book Tiny Homes. Each one of the 1300 photos is better than the next. These are tiny homes, under 500 square feet...perfect little cabins, tree houses, hobbit-style homes, homes on water and homes with wheels. The stories of the homes inhabitants are just as intriguing and I have to say, the builders are really on to something.
The original 1973 book Shelter had drawings of 5 small structures....from there the country went through the excess of the 80s - big, bigger, biggest was the war cry. Now, with the economic downturn, more and more people are interested tiny homes. Granted, some of the images in the book are retreats or studios - but downsizing is a main component of the feature stories. The subtitle of the book Simple Shelter / Scaling back in the 21st Century is right on the money.
If you have been sucked into Pinterest, you may have seen pages of tiny homes posted, or maybe I am just drawn to the gypsy-type. I've seen pin boards of vintage Airstreams, tree houses and boat houses. This growing trend is a healthy alternative to the over-sized, indulgence of the past. Supersized, no thank you.
I live in a small home. Granted it is not as small as those homes, but definitely smaller than the one's my kids friends live in. Sure those families can have twenty kids over to play in their basement - but my kids do not hang out in my basement, (cause I don't have one) - so they are forced to be near the family, or play outside. I may not have a basement, or playroom, no hot tub or separate family room - heck the kids even share bedrooms but all this carries it's own built in blessings.
My grandparents were part of the Shelter wave. They built their own home in the middle of nowhere. They planned and dug and set up solar panels, laid concrete and planted an amazing garden - just the two of them in their sixties. The house is a wonder. Every piece of it was thought out. They didn't have excess stuff, they had their special stuff.
-Regardless of where you live though, the principle of Tiny Homes can be incorporated into your life. Take a good look at what you surround yourself with. What is the purpose? Do you really need it all? Could you bless someone else? Self-sufficiency and simplicity is not just for the people who chuck it all to live in the wilderness of British Columbia, even suburbanites like me can embrace the beauty of less.
Tiny Homes by Lloyd Kahn was published by Shelter Publications, January 15, 2012
Freaky Cigar Shop Experience
February 22nd 2012 19:11
I did not get my hair cut, because of a cigar shop. More accurately, because of my lack of attention to the world around me. Instead of a hair cut, which would have probably been a bad idea afterall, I am now the proud owner of a cute collection of cigar boxes. yep, Arturo Fuente is fun to say.
Let me explain... after a meeting in a slightly unfamiliar town, I suddenly had the urge to chop my hair into a more modern style. I thought it was time to turn this kindergarten mane, complete with bangs into something short and sassy. Well the universe said no, in no uncertain terms
Trendy Clogs
Trendy fall clogs
The clunky clog is a familiar look that is inherently full of attitude. You can hardly go from point A to point B in a pair of clogs without feeling a little tough and sassy. Not only are they still rocking the forefront of fashion, they are a practical choice for fall. The height and solid heel provide protection from the elements on unpredictable fall days and can easily be slipped on and off
No-cost halloween costume ideas
I have a thing for costumes. So much of a thing, that friends know they can call me up to find a certain something-something to complete, or make, their costume. Lent a fancy dress to a friend, a stretchy metallic silver gown, who proceeded to alter it into a mini dress. Um, okay, would rather that didn't happen, but it does. I didn't expect to see it again anyways, since I lent it to a guy going as Marilyn Monroe...he can keep the sliced up, stretched out thing.
But there are several Halloween fancy dress options for this year that have peaked my interest including
