Sydney VS Melbourne

August 18th 2007 01:53
Sydney Vs Melbourne - the battle of these two cities has been raging for many years.
Both states claim to hold the crown but what is it that makes each of these two cities unique in their own rights.

Let me break it down starting with Sydney.....
-Sydney is home to the most famous coat hanger and house in the world
-Sydney is the biggest city population wise in Australia
-Ask tourist to name a city in Australia and guaranteed Sydney is more likely to be the answer than Melbourne - Bondi Beach might play a large part of that but then again the beaches in Sydney deserve their own mention

- Sydney's weather is not as unpredictable as Melbournes
- Then there were the Sydney Olympic Games "the best games ever"
-Sydney has The Rocks - history brings the first settlers and convicts here
-Off course Sydney also hosts the best fire works in the world come New Years Eve

In comparison, lets look at Melbourne.
- Melbourne well known for it's nightlife and diverse culture
- Melbourne brought us AFL and men in little tight shorts
-Melbourne is named after the queens first Prime Minister Lord Melbourne - hence has royal connections (do we really care? Do Melbournites even know this?)
-Melbourne hosts the Melbourne Cup
- Melbourne is cheaper to live in than Sydney

There are many points that i have not mentioned here and sure there were many more i did not know until i did some research. Most net sites including Wikepedia rate Melbourne as having the upper hand but think about it realistic and exclude landmark features and restaurants, if everyone can truly afford it wouldn't Sydney be the number 1 choice?

Feel free to agree or disgree with me.....

as a melbournian, studying in university here in sydney i feel it valid to make my thoughts felt.

firstly, i will declare my biases and will say that i am a victorian through and through.

now onto the case on which is the better city:

sydney's natural beauty is breathtaking when talking about the coast and harbour, beyond those two things there is nothing out there more to separate the two cities.

if we're going to talk sports than we can move beyond just the melbourne cup which is an institution itself. how about the australian open, or the f1 grand prix? furthermore, how about the afl grand final which attracts arguably more viewers and wider interest than both rugby codes.

arts? the melbourne comedy festival is world class, and melbourne in general is known as a city for artistic flare.

food and culture? if you have picked up the sydney morning herald over the past week you'll see its writers bemoan the fact that sydney's cafe, restaurant and bar culture has nothing on melbourne's. in fact there was another story today comparing the two cities!

and when robert deniro decided to open up his world famous nobu restaurant franchise where did he choose? melbourne of course!

all of these arguments are down to perception and i don't hide my melbourne biases.

Very true Stanley.

One More Point!
On post cards and promotions what are the only features taken as photos in Sydney?
The harbour, The Bridge and Bondi Beach.
And Melbourne?
Bourke Street, China Town, Alley Ways, MCG, Olympic Park, Botanic Gardens, Exhibition Centre, Flinder St Station and plenty more...

Melbourne also has a more European feel, and what is better than European Cities? NOTHING
