Sydney Madness

Part one: Striking it rich
Losing your job is never fun.
Especially when you don’t have a gig lined up and your prospects of landing something decent in the near future are remote.
But why mope when there is havoc to wreak. My theory – the best way to console is to go down the path of self-destructiveness. Things will eventually pan out the way you hope. Right?
So a few weeks after my resignation from The Rag, I decided to squander my hard-earned savings on a massive weekend bender in Sydney.
My mate Rob, who we shared in epic travels across the US and Singapore, was a willing accomplice.
After catching the red eye, we arrived in the Australia’s greatest city at 6am and promptly spent the day engaging the sights in a sober manner. But the spiral into decay was an ever present shadow on proceedings.
Rob and I checked into our hotel in the afternoon and were given the unexpected news that we were to be upgraded to the penthouse suite.
I’m still not sure of the exact reasons for our transfer but it was amazing – three bedrooms, two bathrooms, kitchen, lounge, balcony and private top floor open area.
So what to do?
My mate and I headed to the nearest bottle O, purchased a bottle of American Honey, Southern Comfort, six pack of bud and two cigars.
Opportunities come rare in life, so when an opportunity arises you have to make the most of it, particularly when it comes in the form of a penthouse suite.
I was lighting up a cigar on the top floor open patio, looking down at Sydney’s buzz, a mega city at its chaotic best. In the distance, I could make out the Sydney Cricket Ground, home to some of Australia’s greatest sporting moments.
The stench of Dullsville and my tedious existence was, at this very moment, a distant memory.
To be continued…….
