Life on board a luxury cruiser

October 25th 2007 03:07
By Michael Davies

Sitting in a comfy deck chair sipping champagne as you slide over the glassy waters of the Great Barrier Reef aboard a private 30m luxury cruiser, en route to a clutch of Australia's most exclusive islands while the coastline fades to nothing... surely there can be no sweeter escape.

There are boats, there are ships, there are liners, and then there are the sleek, luxurious cruisers which cater to the holiday whims of millionaires and movie stars alike. One such vessel is M/V Cosmos. With a crew of five ready to fulfil your heart's desires 24 hours a day -- whether that be a succulently prepared coral trout or a chilled fruit flavored gelati enjoyed in the steaming outdoor spa -- this cruiser adds a whole new dimension to Rest and Relaxation.

Your Skipper will ensure a tailor made holiday in and around the Whitsunday Islands, Port Douglas, Cairns, the grassy Michaelmas Cay and the spectacular Lizard Island. In summer, Cosmos is based in Sydney Harbour, from which the waterways of the entire east coast are at your disposal.

The only real difficulty is deciding how to spend the day. Perhaps you'll wake up early to an impeccably presented hot and cold buffet, or sleep in and enjoy the 5 star appointments of your state room, before emerging for a brunch of freshly baked pastries and bite-sized baguettes with smoked salmon on a sunny outdoor lounge.

Perhaps you'll find a warm patch of deck to sit down with sun glasses, sunscreen and a good book and enjoy the seductive lapping of the sea, or perhaps you'll take to the water for some island hopping in the tender. For the sports minded, a spot of exercise on paddle skis or a windsurfer, or snorkeling/scuba diving for a close up view of the technicolour delights of the warm, pristine world heritage protected seas. Fishing is also a great option -- your catch will be cleaned and filleted for your evening meal. But then, anchored alongisde Lizard Island, the water looks so enticing -- a swim would be magic. You are truly spoilt for choice.

Cosmos is designed for comfort and speed, with state of the art technology to take this cruiser safely and smoothly across the shallow reefs. Eight guests are well provided for in 2 queen sized state rooms with ensuites and 2 twin rooms, also with ensuites. The spaciousness of the 3 decks makes everyone feel at home. You can have privacy or party with others as the mood takes you.

The bar and dining areas all air-conditioned are on par with those of the best resort, but the watercolour views from the wrap around windows are incomparable. Your talented chef whips up delicious low-fat meals such as sushi, Moroccan lamb and Indonesion chicken, but this is a whole new open air dining experience under starlit skies.

As you approach the speck in the distance that is to be tomorrow's picnic ground, you catch yourself wondering how your work colleagues are coping without you, what bills await you at home and whether there or any important messages on your voice mail. But then, reaching for your champagne flute and stretching out into the sun, you catch yourself and realize none of it matters.
