First Australian swine flu patient dies
SWINE flu remains mild in Australia and most people infected make a rapid and full recovery, the Federal Government has said after a man confirmed with the virus died.
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon tonight issued a statement after the death of a 26-year-old West Australian man in an Adelaide hospital.
The man had tested positive to the influenza A(H1N1) virus yesterday while suffering from a long-term serious medical condition, Ms Roxon said.
"While swine flu is mild in most, severe in some and moderate overall, those with existing conditions are more vulnerable to the severe effects of the disease," Ms Roxon said.
These conditions include cardiovascular, renal and respiratory diseases, asthma and pregnancy.
Ms Roxon said that during the protect phase of the pandemic, the Government remained focused on identifying, targeting and treating people who are most vulnerable to severe complications from swine flu.
"The Australian Government offers sincere condolences to the mans family," Ms Roxon said.
SA Health chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said national health authorities had been alerted, and that the matter would be investigated further.
