Super Bowl XLV: The Steeler Side
February 7th 2011 19:50
The Steelers lost. So last night sucked. Waking up this morning sucked - more that usual. Work sucked. The rest of this week will suck. Most of February, which already sucks, will now suck worse. Worst of all, it's not like I'm guaranteed a 2011 season to look forward to!
Ah, but I will get over it, like all of Steeler Nation will get over it. The pain of it, right now, is pretty heavy, but like all things sport it will pass quickly. Frankly I'll be too busy pretty soon to worry about asking the million what if questions that Super Bowl XLV created.
Here's the bottom line. The better team won last night. That's it. The Packers played better defense, forcing three turnovers and styming Pittsburgh's deep passing game. They played better offense - Aaron Rodgers was simply stunning at times. Perfect. They played solid special teams. They didn't make too many mistakes. The mistakes they did make did not cost them terribly. Conversely, every mistake Pittsburgh made - of which there were many - cost them. Call it fate, karma or whatever you want, but for sure none of the breaks went Pittsburgh's way. And that's okay, too, because I think you often have to manufacture your own breaks, and the Steelers just didn't do it last night. They have no excuses, no one to blame but themselves. They lost, to the better team.
I find that the bitterness of losing is somewhat assuaged by the fact the loss was to Green Bay. This is a franchise I admire for many reasons. So I guess that if we have to lose, it's better to lose to Green Bay. I guess.
I think that this season was a remarkable successful one. Only one team can win the Super Bowl. To get there, even though the loss is more heart-wrenching that most, is a feat unto itself. The Steelers were not supposed to be this good, not without Ben. The line was not supposed to perform how it did. There were lots of "supposed tos" that never happened. So it should go down as a successful season although it fell short of the game's ultimate success.
There's always next year. Assuming the idiots who claim to be negotiating get their collective crap together and actually get to bargaining!

As I later came to realize with the Penguins .. sometimes you need to lose to win. And really this might give Ben the time and peace to fix himself off-field. It's kind of hard to humble yourself while on top of the world.
Man does it suck though. Nothing feels right at all. And I agree, the worst would be having to sit on this loss for another year.
