Super 14 Round 10

April 17th 2008 07:23
Round 10 of the Super 14 is going to be a cracker. Here are the teams and my predictions!

Chiefs V Crusaders in Hamilton
Tv: Live Coverage on Fox Sports 3 from 5.35pm AEST

Chiefs:
Mils Muliaina (captain), Lelia Masaga, Richard Kahui, Callum Bruce, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Stephen Donald, Brendon Leonard, Sione Lauaki, Tanerau Latimer, Liam Messam, Kevin O'Neill, Toby Lynn, Ben Castle, Tom Willis, Simms Davison.
Reserves: Aled de Malmanche, Ben May, Jay Williams, Faifili Levave, Jamie Nutbrown, Dwayne Sweeney, Sosene Anesi.

Crusaders:
Scott Hamilton, Sean Maitland, Casey Laulala, Tim Bateman, Caleb Ralph, Stephen Brett, Andrew Ellis, Mose Tuiali'i, Richie McCaw (captain), Kieran Read, Ali Williams, Brad Thorn, Greg Somerville, Corey Flynn, Ben Franks.

Reserves: Ti'i Paulo, Wyatt Crockett, Ross Filipo, Nasi Manu, Kahn Fotuali'i, Hamish Gard, Kade Poki.

The big question that will be posed to the Chiefs is can they compete at the breakdown with the might of the Crusaders forwards. There is no doubt in my mind that the Chiefs have the strike power in the backs to compete against the Crusaders but with the form of Stephen Donald patchy at best, nothing short of perfection will do.

If you're a betting man/lady:

The Crusaders have covered the start 7/9 weeks but this week, without Dan Carter, i think they might struggle. So take the $1.90 Chiefs 6.5!

Reds V Force in Brisbane
TV: Live covergae on Fox Sports 3 from 7.40pm AEST

The Reds team is (from fullback):

Clinton Schifcofske, Brando Vaaulu, Morgan Turinui, Berrick Barnes, Peter Hynes, Quade Cooper, Ben Lucas, Leroy Houston, David Croft, John Roe, James Horwill (c), Van Humphries, Dayna Edwards, Stephen Moore, Ben Coutts.

Reserves: Sean Hardman, Rodney Blake, Ed O'Donoghue, Poutasi Luafutu, Will Genia, Andrew Walker, Charlie Fetoai.

Emirates Western Force

1. Pek Cowan,2. Tai McIsaac,. Troy Takiari,4. Tom Hockings,5. Nathan Sharpe (c),6. Scott Fava,7. David Pocock,8. Richard Brown,9. Chris OYoung,10. Lachlan MacKay,11. Drew Mitchell,12. Scott Staniforth (vc),13. Ryan Cross,14. Haig Sare,15. Cameron Shepherd

Reserves
16. Luke Holmes,17. AJ Whalley,18. Sam Wykes,19. Tamaiti Horua,20. James Stannard,21. James Connor,22. Nick Cummins

Force have lost, who i believe to be the second best player in the world at the moment, Matt Giteau for this week but have bought in Lachlan MacKay who, in my opinion, is no reason to panic. MacKay has already proven he can fill the 10 jersey at Super 14 level with his time at the Waratahs. With names like Latham, Cordingley, and Holmes all out injured i think the Force will take out this Australian derby.

If you're a a betting man or lady:

Force 13

Waratahs V Lion from Sydney
TV: Live on Fox Sports 3 from 5.30pm AEST

Waratahs: Sam Norton-Knight; Lachlan Turner, Rob Horne, Tom Carter, Lote Tuqiri; Kurtley Beale, Luke Burgess; Wycliff Palu, Phil Waugh (captain); Dean Mumm, Dan Vickerman; Will Caldwell; Matt Dunning, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Benn Robinson. Replacements: Adam Freier, Al Baxter, David Lyons, Beau Robinson, Brett Sheehan, Matt Carraro, Alfi Mafi.

Lions: Louis Ludik; Dusty Noble, Jaco Pretorius, Doppies la Grange, Rayno Benjamin; Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jano Vermaak; Willem Alberts, Joe van Niekerk , Cobus Grobbelaar (captain); Gerhard Mostert, Dewald Senekal; J.C. van Rensburg, Willie Wepener, Heinke van der Merwe.
Replacements: Ethienne Reynecke, Ross Geldenhuys, Zyl, Franco van Merwe, Wilhelm Koch, Chris Jonck, Rudi Vogt, Jannie Boshoff

Lions have come out in the local media and said they plan to play physical. NOOOOOO! A South African side intending to play physical rugby. I won’t hear of it!

If you're a betting man or lady:

Waratahs to lead @ half time by 8-14 @ $3.75 ( bit of value)

Brumbies v Sharks at Canberra Stadium, Canberra
LIVE on Fox Sports 3 (1930 EST)
Brumbies: Mark Gerrard; Peter Playford, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Tyrone Smith, Francis Fainifo; Christian Lealiifano, Patrick Phibbs; Julian Salvi, George Smith (captain), Mitchell Chapman; Mark Chisholm, Alister Campbell; Guy Shepherdson, Saia Faingaa, Nic Henderson.

Replacements: John Ulugia, Salesi Maafu, Peter Kimlin, Stephen Hoiles, Joshua Holmes, Matt Toomua, Sanualio Afeaki, Ben Alexander (one to be omitted)

Sharks: Stefan Terblanche; Odwa Ndungane, Francois Steyn, Bradley Barritt, J.P. Pietersen; Frederic Michalak, Rory Kockott; Ryan Kankowski, Jacques Botes, Keegan Daniel; Johann Muller (captain), Steven Sykes; B.J. Botha, Bismarck du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira

Replacements: Craig Burden, Jannie du Plessis/Deon Carstens, Albert van den Berg, A.J. Venter, Ruan Pienaar, Waylon Murray, Adrian Jacobs

Stirling Mortlock was named earlier in the week but has since been withdrawn due to a concussion with fellow Wallaby Adam Ashley-Cooper moving into the centres and Francis Fainifo taking Ashley-Coopers place on the wing. The loss of Mortlock is a big one but the fortress that is Canberra Stadium and the Sharks' poor performance against the Highlanders last weekend points to a Brumbies victory.

If you're a betting man or lady:

Brumbies 1-12

Bulls v Highlanders Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
LIVE on Fox Sports 2 (2300 EST)
Bulls: Zane Kirchner; Akona Ndungane, J.P. Nel, Wynand Olivier, Bryan Habana; Morne Steyn, Heini Adams; Pierre Spies, Wikus van Heerden (captain), Deon Stegmann; Wilhelm Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha; Werner Kruger, Derick Kuun, Gurthro Steenkamp.

Replacements: Bandisa Maku, Jaco Engels, Rayno Gerber, Danie Rossouw,Francois Hougaard, Derick Hougaard, Pedrie Wannenburg

Highlanders: Paul Williams, Matt Saunders, Niva Ta'auso, Johnny Leota, Fetu'u Vainikolo, James Wilson, Jimmy Cowan, Steven Setephano, Craig Newby, Adam Thomson, Tom Donnelly, Hoani MacDonald, Clint Newland, Jason Macdonald, Jamie Mackintosh.

Replacements: David Hall, Chris King, Hayden Triggs, Alando Soakai, Toby Morland, Daniel Bowden, Brett Mather.

Highlanders performed well against the undefeated Sharks last Friday night but the Bulls, in Pretoria, desperate to restore pride in the jersy after the 50-22 shalacking from the Hurricanes. This will be too much for the boys from Dunedin. The Bulls in a dirty dirty game.

Bulls halftime/fulltime

Sunday
Stormers v Hurricanes at Newlands Rugby Stadium, Cape Town
LIVE on Fox Sports 2 (0100 EST)
Stormers: Conrad Jantjes; Tonderai Chavhanga, Gcobani Bobo, Jean De Villiers (captain), Sireli Naqelevuki; Peter Grant, Ricky Januarie; Luke Watson, Francois Louw, Schalk Burger; Andries Bekker, Adriaan Fondse; Brian Mujati, Schalk Brits, J.D. Moller

Replacements: Tiaan Liebenberg, Brok Harris, Ross Skeate, Robbie Diack, Bolla Conradie, Tony Brown, Gio Aplon

Hurricanes: Cory Jane; Hosea Gear, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Shannon Paku; Jimmy Gopperth, Piri Weepu; Rodney So'oialo (captain), Chris Masoe, Jerry Collins; Jason Eaton, Jeremy Thrush; Neemia Tialata, Andrew Hore, John Schwalger.

Replacements: Hikawera Elliot, Tim Fairbrother, Bernie Upton, Scott Waldrom, Willie Ripia, Tane Tu'ipulotu, Zac Guildford

Personally, this is my match of the round. Nobody really expected the Stormers to feature this year but they have proven many a doubter wrong with wins in New Zealand and Australia against more fancied oppositions. Key match-ups include Luke Watson V Jerry Collins, Chavhanga V Nonu and Januarie V Weepu. The Hurricanes by a nose.

If you're a betting man or lady:

Hurricanes to win.

i don't think they'll go down but it wouldn't surprise me if they win ugly (their game against the cheetahs springs to mind)

still think they will start relatively slow!
