Bitch Magazine, the ultimate feminist magazine today, needs help. Lot's of help. About $40K worth of help.
Many people have been talking about the impending death of the publishing industry. Newspapers are being replaced by online media as ways for people to gain information. Unfortunately with that decline also comes a knock to magazines such as Bitch. Now we bitches need to come together to help save Bitch.
First the bad news: The print publishing industry as a whole is staring into a void. Across the board, newsstand magazine sales are in a slump, subscriber numbers are down, and paper and postal costs continue to rise. But it's not magazines like US Weekly or Vogue that you'll see disappearing from the newsstands—they have the parent companies and the resources to weather industry ill winds. It's the small, independent magazines like Bitch that will disappear, because the odds are already stacked high against us. And simply put: We need to raise $40,000 by October 15th in order to print the next issue of Bitch.
Yes, $40,000 sounds like a lot of money. But with so many of us supporters just a few dollars each can quickly add up to a lot. If you're not already a subscriber why not get a subscription now. And add in another for a friend that you know who would love some honest bitching.
When faith alone is not enough,
To keep our heads barely above,
We look for reason and come up empty-handed.
And when our children fight our wars,
While we sit back just keeping score,
We're teaching murder not understanding now.
We're setting the fires to light the way,
We're burning it all to begin again,
With hope in our hearts and bricks in our hands,
We sing for change
The lives our buried sons have laid,
Won't cancel debts we've yet to pay,
In death, we justify anything now,
As long as we blindly obey and do exactly what they say,
We'll have no one to blame, but ourselves now.
We're setting the fires to light the way,
We're burning it all to begin again,
With hope in our hearts and bricks in our hands,
We sing for change.
We run on the fumes of injustice,
We'll never die with the fuel that you give us,
Keep it coming 'cause I'm prepared to burn,
Keep running, find me at every turn.
Your life around,
(into something true, into something true)
So turn your life around,
(into something true, something true)
We're setting the fires to light the way,
We're burning it all to begin again,
With hope in our hearts and bricks in our hands,
We sing for change.
I've heard this page being ripped out of the history books often this election cycle, no doubt in an effort to combat the fact that a person of color is running for President on the Democratic ticket. The truth is that yes, Lincoln was a Republican. In fact, looking back at history Republicans were the progressive party of the United States.
The problem happens when Republicans cross their arms and assume they've won the battle by simply bringing that up. Perhaps they honestly believe the parties did not change lines, but I'm betting more on the fact that they are hoping you don't know that. The republican party of today is barely recognizable to the party that it began as. As the Democrats tossed off the Southern White vote, moving towards a more progressive stance the Republicans were eager to scoop those voters up and make them their own. Which often meant turning back the original party ideals
At the risk of blowing my blood pressure through the roof I watched the RNC and all the speeches. Of course there were moments i was throwing things at the TV and shouting like a mad woman, but I made it through and learned some important lessons. Like you can disagree with everything on the Democrat's platform, hate most Democrats, and still call yourself one. Yes, I'm looking at you Lieberman. I also learned that McCain was a POW, and was a POW, and was a POW, and was a POW. I learned that country first means screw the citizens second.
Those of us in the West often forget that we're living a life of privilege. We have food, clothing, shelter. WalMarts, internet cafes, bottled water, the things that so many don't have and may never see. So I think it's extremely important that we stop and look at the conditions women in other parts of the world have to face. Not just look at it, think about it, let it soak in, get angry, shake your fist, use your voice to let others know.
Twisty has one post up that you should read. Imagine that you are taken, shot, and buried alive for wanting to marry someone of your choosing. It sounds outrageous here, but in some parts of the world it still happens. The deed was written off as a "tribal custom", a custom instead of a brutal murder of three teenage girls and two adult women for daring to speak their minds about who they want to marry
As most people already know McCain picked an unknown from Alaska to be his VP choice, Governor Sarah Palin. It's pretty clear that this is quite the calculated choice. It is the first time that the Republicans have put a woman on the ticket, and a nice tie in to McCains ad attacking Obama for not picking Clinton. His message is pretty clear. "See, I love women! I picked one for my VP. Just ignore my policies, ideals, and practices. One vagina is as good as another, isn't it?"
Yes John, we're all clearly such silly women that we'll vote for the vagina without looking at the politics. And if you really think that you're a bigger sexist jerk than I previous thought
This video is of a group of women claiming to be Clinton supporters who have gone over to McCain. personally, my opinion is that if any of these women were actually Clinton supporters then I've got some ocean front property in Kansas to sell you. The amount of racism and hatred expressed here is absurd and I cannot see how anyone who agrees with Clinton's policies and what she stood for could A) vote for McCain of all people, and B) spread so much blind hatred against another person based on where he went to school. Frankly, the fact that she refused to provide any proof says more than enough to me about the honesty of the group
Well Edgar, I'm not young enough not to know history and to know that the Republicans of today have nothing to do with the Repubs of back then ever since they sold out to the Southern White voters. Why would I vote Republican based on what they did in history when the party of today has none of those same values?
But thanks for being a typical Republican and assuming everyone that isn't you is an idiot! I love it when you guys show your true colors, if only you would do it more often.
Oh, and Edward, if you don't like the way I blog don't stop by. I'm not writing for you, get over it.
Steven, I'm still waiting to be shown where I brought out the claws on Palin? Or perhaps you just assumed I did without bothering to actually read the post. I'm betting the latter.
Edward, why does it take 2 when we expect dad to step up but only 1 when we expect mom to do it all. If you're so worried about it taking 2 parents then he shouldn't be going off as a fisherman and an oil worker.
Except that he's not, he's already stated that he's taking time off to be with the kids. But that doesn't matter to guys like you does it.
I said those who are deeply religious, not a religion. Just because you enjoying twisting my words to fit your need and then expect me to let you does not mean that I will. Cry "religion" all day, it does not change what I said originally.
There are hundreds, thousands of individuals who are deeply religious and feel that they are called by their religious beliefs to fulfill the traditional man at work/woman at home ideal. I never said a word about them trying to force all woman back to home. My god are you unable to read the words on the screen or do you just create your own insanity as you go. I said that the deeply religious people who feel that a woman's place is at home might be less inclined to vote for McCain because of Palin. Did you get that? Can you understand the words that are right in front of you?
Just because they don't all go to your church means nothing. Just because you choose to ignore them means nothing. Just because you turn a blind eye means nothing. Just because you don't like the few examples I give and choose to ignore all the people who listen to them and agree means nothing.
And, P.S. I don't have health insurance. Neither does my mother. Neither do my grandparents. Neither do my neighbors. Neither do my partner's parents. But I guess we're all just really figments of Obama's mind right.
Go away now, as SL likes to say "ignorance is boring."
Perhaps they don't teach reading comprehension to become a pastor. I said with "the deeply religious", not a religion itself but the individual people who are deeply religious and hold to the traditional ideals. As far as I can tell a religion can't actually vote, however it's members can. And if you truly think there are not religious people who feel that a woman's place is in the home I'd like to welcome you to the real world.
Examples: Pastor Hagee who preached that men who stayed home with the kids and let their wives work are going to hell. Phyllis Schlafly , nearly any family that is Quiverfull, most of the hard conservatives, should I go on.
One last things Damo. How many of those kids did you carry in your womb? How many did you give birth to? Oh, really, you say none. Well, it kind of sounds like if Ruby can't speak on this for not having kids then you can't either. Except that she has a uterus where as you don't. Hmmm, seems like she's ahead of you on the right to speak ladder.
