introducing Australia's new fashion commentator
September 14th 2006 02:36
so Australia's new fashion commentator ay, i guess thats me. Let me introduce myself.
Im known as fashion rag trade, im just a struggling student trying to establish myself as a writer and a fashion designer. im not going to tell you too many key details about myself, cause i feel that it'l just reck all the fun and mystery that internet blogging contains. i will tell you this though, i didnt realy pass english in high school, so terribly sorry about my poor spelling and even worse punctuation, but i guess that just adds to my charm and easygoing-ness.
so fashion. such a small word for such a broad meaning. but my main question for today is, is style a sense of fashion? or is style a knowledge of fashion?
fashion to me, is mainly just the upper class name for clothes. high end fashion, is clothes by designers that charge a bloody lot for a pair of skinny legs. i dont have anything wrong with expensive clothing, but honesty you've got to know that your paying that money for good quality and the right materials.
style to me, is knowing how things work together, and most of all showing your own individuality through what you wear. you'll never ever, find me stealing someone else's style without putting a bit of a punch of my own individual style into it.
As for me, im a girl that goes to my local op shops and buys dresses for $5 and then comes home and spends the afternoon cutting them into a mini or sewing random things to it. i buy vintage men's biker boots, two sizes to big for me and then pair them with shorts. i strut around in black skinny leg jeans with oversized tops with a pin-striped vest thrown over it all, i attach badges to the bottoms of my skirts, and then wear them as a dress!
when i read back over that, i sound more abnormal than i thought, but its my own individuality coming through, showing them in my clothes. people express themself in many different ways, you've just got to find the key that shows off who you are.
i think i would have to go with, that style is a sense of fashion, not a knowledge. Having fashion knowledge is excellent, but i say just leave that boring theory stuff to the designers. It is great though to look back in history to see where the current trends have come from, for example this season is all about the "bubble skirt" which eventuated from the late 80's. but i do have to say that, the interpretations today are much better than the originals, as for back then you looked like a giant marshmellow. oh, you should of seen it, it was the craze for all formal dresses, all dressed up in taffada. (and no, i wasnt around back then, thank god!)
so my advice for this season is show your true colours, and add your own individuality into what you wear. i cant believe im going to say this, but if you do it well it can be more rewarding than indulging in a massive block of chocolate...
always, fashion rag trade.
keep an eye out for my new posts about what to wear this season, and where to buy a awsome dress for you formal.
