Straight Jacket

Set in 1950's Hollywood, Straight Jacket is the technicolour world of Guy Stone (Matt Letscher) Hollywoods most eligible bachelor, Hollywood star and closeted gay actor. Cast in the role of Ben Hurr through the wiles of savvy agent Jerry (Veronica Cartwright) Guy's picture perfect world is rocked when he is caught on camera by jealous rival Freddie Stevens (Jack Plotnick) being arrested in a gay bar.
In order to save his career and reputation, Jerry comes up with the perfect solution, a wife, in the shape of hapless secretary, and die-hard Guy Stone fan Sallly (Carrie Preston). In order to escape his new bride, Guy signs up to a movie about unionised mines. With the McCarthy era in full swing, studio boss Saul decides the movie is too risky and orders the production shut down until red, white and blue rewrites can be done.
Enter novelist Rick Forster (Adam Greer) who reluctantly agree's to re-write the nightmare his novel has become.
The reluctant screenwriter and the closted star soon begin a love affair that takes both of their lives in directions neither expected.
Straight Jacket is a wonderful film by Director and Writer Richard Day. Watching it, you're caught up in the innocence and cynism of a time long gone. The actors are wonderfully cast in their roles, and current True Blood star Carrie Preston is amazing as the innocent, Doris-Day style Sally Stone.
I love this movie. A review on IMD referred to the film as the perfect gay date movie and it is. The journey's the characters undertake is both whimsical and life affirming. Although it doesn't take itself too seriously, Straight Jacket packs a real punch regarding being true to yourself no matter the cost.
If you're after a film that delivers more than expected from a gay romantic comedy, Straight Jacket is the film for you. Perfect viewing for a Saturday night, either with a group of friends, or on your own.
