Steve Irwin the Animal Tormentor?
September 6th 2006 00:18
Germaine Greer has excited the passions of Irwin fans with "deathly eulogy" attacking him. Here is a quote, "The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin, but probably not before a whole generation of kids in shorts seven sizes too small has learned to shout in the ears of animals with hearing 10 times more acute than theirs, determined to become millionaire animal-loving zoo-owners in their turn."
This certainly tests the superstitious limit of what you should say about dead people, especially recently-deceased-not-yet-cold-in-their-grave people. No doubt this will earn her the hatred and "ire" of a generation. Maybe she is saying what of lot of feminazis think. We should of course be defending her right to say it but I suspect that if she comes back to Australia her taxi will earn one or two bricks. These comments must rank as some of the more rank made about a popular hero. Looking at the picture below I suppose we have to conclude, as Greer suggests, that Irwin did torment more than his fair share of beasts.
One is reminded about Gore Vidal's comments about the Oklahoma bomber Tim McVeigh. Vidal did not mean any harm but made more than a few enemies. I suppose Greer like Vidal may come to regret it except that she lives in England and I doubt that the nation of couch dwellers bear much regard to the great outdoors man.
