Starting a band? Some steps to think about. (LINK)

October 27th 2007 13:12
So, someone out there is thinking of starting the awesome World leading band.
You will make a few songs and BOOM, you will be scooped up by a multi national that will shower you and adore you.
Sorry guys, it is not that easy.
If you can create your band and work independantly, you will be a lot better off.
Keep the cash and hard work in house as much as possible. Do not rush for a contarct until you are a literal legal eagle, and then some.
Because I have alot of sad stories for you all, these sad stories all start with the word "contract."

There is so much you have to think of.

For instance, your band name. OK!! so you think you have the perfect name for your band?
Do research, check in Europe, America and everywhere else. It will almost be guaranteed that the name is in use somewhere. To protect your band name you will need to register it as a business name/trading name.

Even then it may only cover your State or Territory.

Please note I am writng this from Australia, so take to account that different countries have different rules, ways of going about things and different companies to register with. This is not even the first step in forming your band but very important that your name is protected by the correct governing bodies. If someone takes it before you do, well......you will have to search for another name. It's that simple.

Think of commonly used words....universal words that are spoken everyday. Nothing long or hard to remember, it must have a ring to it, a catch that is hard to forget. If you have a great name that is easily remembered, this a major battle out of your way.

For example, I manage Melbourne band DUAL FUEL. They have had International number 1 digital tracks, How universal is that, and free promotion. Universal words that cannot be contended. Words that are not patented. Your band name is not a joke, it can make you or break you. Imagine promotiong a band named "the peace loving maggots and blind mice." The name is so long to start it will be forgotten in 30 seconds. Keep your band name to a minimal of syllables and make it positive.

I heard of a band named FUSP......short name but quite difficult to say. I said why not CUSP? change the F to C. It is a word in the dictionary that means two symetrical lines meeting harmoniously. As opposed to FUSP, which means NOTHING. Only an example people.

Got all your band members together? Ok....band meeting time, get together and brain storm for that perfect and world original name.
Keep it simple.....trust me.....it is the general public and industry professionals that will be hearing it. It may sound good to you, but that is you.....it must sound exceptional to the majority.

More later,
all the best.
