Starting a band? Band member contribution (LINK)

Contribution. What a nice word when it is adhered to. A group of people that have enough respect for each other to focus and complete their set task/s. A group of people who know that success is derived by organisation in a collective and responsible manner.
Being a member of a band, not only a band for fun but a band that has extreme seriousness in making it to the world stage is not created by a fluke chance. Indepth thought, strategy and angles are complex issues that are never far from mind.
The world will not come to you, it is for you to go to it, and go it, and go to it again. The music industry is not for the faint hearted, the weak, the easily led , the uneducated or for the sensitive. Like I told band members only tonight. You need to be teflon coated, so the hurt, rejection and insults will not stick to you. You need to be impervious to all weather.
Members of a band are their own close knit family that have their ups and downs, also a family that must learn to share the heavy load. If you leave the hard work, stage set ups and sound checks to one person, you will surely fold. The world is a big place and one person alone cannot carry it forever. Drummers have the most equipment, they work hard and have alot to carry, especially if you have no roadies. Lead singers have......hhmmm, a microphone and the shirt on their back. Believe me, they can use this as an excuse not to help. This is not fair, their load should be equal to everyone elses. If you have a hard working lead singer, do not take him or her for granted.
Truth be told, lead singers can be lazy, forget to help, but the first to point out things while they talk on the phone or stand outside and talk while the guitarist and drummer set up. It is a common problem. Contribution is the word here.
So, the question is, how can a band set up a contribution scheme?
How many bands have never even thought of a detailed band agreement? Yes, this is a binding contract agreed upon and signed by all members of a band. It is a binding contract signed by all members and agreed to before it is signed. Within this agreement you may add member contribution. This also includes expenses. This is only one small part of a band agreement.
Who does what and financial issues are set out in black and white with signatures of agreement. Hence, failure to perform signed tasks is fair on the other members and gives them a leg to stand on. Of course this agreement is not the excuse to penalise members unfairly. It is there to keep every single member honest and loyal to their word and holds respect for everyone involved.
This part of your band agreement must be detailed and explain in full, the reasons for it existing, which member is assigned to help on what tasks and that financial burden is not placed onto one person. Talk and agree to this contract before you sign it, also amend and edit the agreement till it is fair and understood by all parties. This agreement cannot be amended further once signed without all members knowledge. This is a breach of contract. Amendment must be agreed upon by all members, then re edited, then re signed by all members. All members must receive their own copy.
These are small goals that need to be set early in a bands forming. Get niggly issues out of the way.....believe me, you may be great friends now but in time, when the hard work and 3 million dollars is in question, bitterness will come about in 3 seconds flat. Cover yourselves from day one and be fair. Keep the respect and honesty and it will help you go a long way.
