Starting a band? Band Meetings (LINK)

October 28th 2007 05:08
Reality quickly hits home and stresses become major issues if not aired in a civilised and functional manner. Issues from promotional ideas, to brain storming for gigs, ways of getting media attention, who is and who is not pulling their weight as a band member.
What has been done, what hasn't been done and what needs revising.

Without a regular band meeting quite simply, nothing gets done. Ideas cannot be exchanged. It is very easy to play in a loungeroom, garage or rehearsal studio forever. It is very easy to get into the habit of practice and more practice and forget gig hunting or other intricacies that you as a band will need to succeed.

I myself have found that band meetings on practice days just simply, do not work. The mental fatigue after a five hour practice is enough to remove your mental process, hence, nothing but verbal diarroahea is spoken. Set aside a separate day, solely for talking. Write down what you talk about, if you do not, you will very quickly forget what is mentioned.

A lot like a committee, keep your writings for future referral, just like minutes of any standard meeting. Also, if the need arises and you find yourself in hot water down the track, you always have your meeting notes as a form of evidence. This can also help you with copyright issues. Which leads to the last post, contribution. Who will be the minute writer?

With so much to be done in setting up a functional band as a real business there is so much to do. Only true musicians will understand the complexities in this. With so much to discuss and so much to do in setting up a band, it is easy to get caught up in the big circle, where your thoughts run around and around, you get so confused and forget where to start, you forget your first goal in the confusing mumble jumble of everything to do.

Set your goals, write them down and stick to them, one thing at a time, or you will certainly get lost and confused....This is what meetings are for. You are a collective of people as one mind. Every member having the right of equal input. If anyone feels left out, well, you need to address this issue. Without meetings, input and a business like mind, this will certainly dampen your chances of doing well.

Meetings should not be tense and stressful, hear each others ideas and take them on board. Even if they are stupid, it is only an idea and not set in concrete. Through stupid ideas, new ideas may come. Do not ridicule for stupid ideas, we are only human, this is a great way to lose someones confidence. Take the time to be comfortable in a place where you can sit for a few hours. Leave your outside issues behind. Yet in the same breath, if you do have issues and your band members are understanding as they should be, this is a great time to talk. Afterall your band members are your best friends. Atleast they should be if the band will do well in the long run.
