Squeaky Green

Squeaky Green is an earth-friendly cleaning company that was founded by Jennifer Dettinger. She uses all natural green products in place of harsh traditional cleaners. Here is what she had to say about why she started her company and how it works:
The info I have in my brochure is from the website www.planetgreen.discovery.com:
- 17,000: the number of petrochemicals available for home use, only 30 percent of which have been tested for exposure to human health
- 63: the number of synthetic chemical products found in the average American home, translating to roughly 10 gallons of harmful chemicals
- 100: the number of times higher that indoor air pollution levels can be above outdoor air pollution levels, according to US EPA estimates
- 275: the number of active ingredients in antimicrobials that the EPA classifies as pesticides because they are designed to kill microbes
- 5 billion: the number of pounds of chemicals that the institutional cleaning industry uses each year
Right now I use a brand called Earth Friendly. I particularly like their furniture polish. It has a light orange scent and is the only product I use that even has a scent to it. Unfortunately, what people perceive as a "clean" smell is really the chemicals in a product. So, when I am finished cleaning the house it only may faintly smell of oranges, not bleach or pledge or ammonia.
I have also purchased products from Shaklee (www.shaklee.com). Their Get Clean line has a product called Basic H2 Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate. Depending on how you dilute this product, you can clean just about anything with it, so I buy the 1/2 gallon bottle and dilute it into different spray bottles for use on everything in the home.
For cleaning windows and stainless steel, I use a water and white vinegar mixture. And for scouring everything from bathtubs to sinks and stove tops, I sprinkle on baking soda and scrub with a cloth or brush.
I think that cost is comparable to traditional cleaners, if not cheaper because you can use so many affordable household items such as vinegar, baking soda, olive oil, etc. I have found that they work just as well and I don't have to hold my breath while using them!
