Sailing on Sydney Harbour 21/10/09

November 24th 2009 03:29

A short and sweet sailing race report today.

The committee boat started it by flying an "S" flag so a shortened course. The wind was pretty light so I guess they figured that we wouldn't finish in the time limit if they set a full course. Very reasonable of them.

It was a SSE course of 11 miles so take out a couple of legs out and it's over very quickly.

Even if it was blowing a gentle 6 knots with a bit of pressure up to 12 knots.

Off we ventured, in the end just the 5 of us instead of our preferred 6 as "Howie" one the new boys, was off doing his sailing course.

Hope they don't teach him too many bad habits. They usually do so you have to untrain them and work 'em up again so they really know what and why they doing.

All in all a good fun race. With the continual change in wind pressure there was a lot of trimming going on.

On off, up down, in out.

There was always something to do to the sail trim to get the boat going.

A v good lesson in main trim for moi.

It's pretty satisfying to steer the boat on the main with the helm neutral and not dragging at all.

For a couple of minutes we managed it anyway.

The kite set was entertaining. Particularly the rip in one of the lower panels. Nearly a metre long it was.

At least in the light breeze it didn't commit suicide and shred itself into a thousand pieces which it easily could have.

It did it on one of the jib hanks which are class required.

The last leg was a hard reach from SC around Shark Point and onto the finish line off Shark Island.

Excellent speed in the light air. She loves it she does. We were well ahead of the converted Etchell Wallop and rapidly caught the other Casa Major and closed on Norn.

Ah heck. Leeward boat but a half a boat in front in front of Casa Major we were right on to finish off the committee boat.

Both of us on port tacks. C'mon! C'mon.

They were watching us very closely and trying everything to wring the last 1/4 knot out of her.

Then out of distance came a Div 2 boat on starboard.

We had to dip him and shoot the line. The Div 2 tacked on top of us and shoot the line as well.

Killed us. Big bully. A couple of boat lengths lost.

So there went 2nd.

A great pity she didn't continue on her starboard tack and force Casa Major to dip as well.

Back on the course poor old Come by Chance didn't go straight for the line. She took the Island mark and charged off down the course as you would do for the full course. Didn't see the "S" flag did they. She looked around, suddenly realised her error and had to climb back up to eventually finish. Cost her quite a few places.

Another lesson. Read the flags!

Still we're happy with our 3rd across the line and a handicap 2nd.

Good racing.

Chris

Sailing on Sydney Harbour 14/10/09

November 17th 2009 01:30
Oh the pain.....

Not so good last Saturday.

A pity as it was a great Sydney Harbour day.

Warm, even hot, 10-14 knots, NE shifting to East.

Not that we're one to complain and blame other things that are nothing to do with us.

Oh, but we are!

Any old excuse will do really.

The start.

Ouch.

Some one had parked a blo*dy great cargo ship just in front of the line.

If you hit the boat end start you could get 'round it after a short tack on port.

So we didn't do that did we.

We went looking for a clean start where we could tack onto starboard, find our usual hole and clean up.

Great in theory except the hole didn't appear. Regrettably last.

And we were too close to the ship and lost a few more boat lengths as we sailed through its lee.

Never mind, that gives us heaps of boats to pass.

Which we did. 3rd at the top mark. Hmm. that'll do.

A bit of confusion at the 1st kite set from Lady Bay to WS. The wrong pole had been called so we had to fix that. Then the kite halyard was lost in the confusion and it had to be hauled up by hand without help at the mast.

I thought I'd have a heart attach. Nearly faint from the effort which as you all know I try to avoid. Memo: Must train more.

So we dropped back to 5th letting Norn and Senta thru.

Which is where we stayed 'till the end.

Our speed wasn't as consistent as we would have liked and we fell back to end up scoring a miserable 8th on handicap.

No, no names will be mentioned but I reckon I had a lot do with it.

Next week!

Great racing

Sailing on Sydney Harbour 7/10/09

Race Report:

Sat was a v nice day for a sail.

Warm. Easterly around 10 - 12 knots.

Short handed again which was a shame.

Other than Skipper Roman and moi on main and trim we had Tom, 2nd race and Andrew 1st race tho both are doing sailing courses.

Andrew did say that he learnt more during one race than weeks of the course.

Discretion being etc etc we did not set a kite.

Usual start, mid line, clear air and good speed. Works a treat. 2nd at top mark behind Casa Major.

Dropped back to 4th on the long kite leg behind Casa Major, Norn and Lahaina.

The story of the race. Drop during the kite runs and pick up on the works.

We stayed in 4th 'till a shy run from EC to Rose Bay.

We kept well clear of Shark point and hardened up for the run to the mark. A good move as it turned out. We picked up 100 or so metres.

Norn dropped her kite coming along Shark Island but Lehaina carried hers all the way. Way to shy. She went backwards.

At the mark we were right behind her and Norn.

Jibes are interesting things. We had a very good view of Lahaina as she wrapped the kite around the forestay, couldn't get it down and had to bear away letting is through. Sad really.

Norn popped her kite and got away a bit by the bottom mark at Neutral Bay.

Another good work and we closed on Norn again. To little to late.

3rd on line with a 3rd on handicap.

Like those 3rds. Good for the point score and the handicap.

Next week the kite's going up. I don't care of it's just me crewing we'll do it!

Good racing.

Sailing on Sydney Harbour

Some time ago I mentioned that there some great ways to have a sail on beautiful Sydney Harbour on a casual basis.

Probably the best kept secret is found in Middle Harbour Yacht Club which is at the Spit Sydney

The big lunch

August 11th 2009 01:42
It was like this.... my good mate "Grumpy" invited me to join him and others at a function organised by the famous "Deerstalkers" Venison and Wine lunch club. This fine organisation has a lunch every couple of months at different venues around Sydney which are selected and organised by any member who cares to do so. Sir James Hardy the well know sailor and wine maker is the Patron. The club motto is "Hell Bent on Going No Where". There is a club song which is sung at regular intervals as called for by the Sergeant at Arms and requires one to stand and finish with the chant "Have another drink on me!" Fines are regularly metered out for imaginary offences as called by any member on one another. The money goes to charity. Needless to say there are no females at these lunches. I think you are getting the idea. Very, very blokes'. And a lot of fun. Last Friday the chosen venue was a pub in the city. "Sweeneys". Hmmm. The member who selected it probably wishes he hadn't. This is a Men's club. Beef. Beer. Wine. Laughs. Unfortunately the food was sort of Thai. And a buffet! At a lunch club? No, no, no. It wasn't the best meal by a long way. Could have been the worst Thai I've ever had. Where was the men's food when you wanted it? Mind you the wines were excellent. We had a very nice tasting of an aged Hunter Valley Semillion 99. Very full, good body and surprisingly dry. This was followed by its younger sister. Amazing what a bit of bottle age can do isn't it. The a wine guessing competition. The usual questions. If you got it right you go to stay standing 'till there was a winner who won a bottle of wine as a prize. As you would expect. For the curious it was a Shiraz, Hunter Valley and 03. You could taste the Hunter Valley mud in it. No, thank you for asking, I didn't win. The table wines were excellent so we got stuck into those. The company was good and the humour flourished even tho...... are the venue. Right over my shoulder the wall paper had all peeled off. Above my head there were two big holes in the ceiling. In fact there were holes everywhere. This place hadn't seen any maintenance for about let me see at a rough guess 50 years. What a joint! A rough pub in a wonderful part of the city at the back of Town Hall. At the show of hands as to should we return not one person voted for it. Well the company was good, the wines were good, their pub brew draft beer was good so all was not lost. A bus home and then a good nights sleep. Now, when's the next one?

Cheers

If you ever get the chance.... go sailing on Sydney Harbour.

There are ways to do this on a racing yacht without any expense except your own and your generosity in shouting the Skipper and crew a drink or two after a casual, social race
