Final Four Preview

March 30th 2012 02:27
Only three more mens college basketball games remain. Well four if you count tomorrow's game three of the best of three CBI series between Washington State and Pittsburgh. Two games on Saturday, and finally the championship on Monday.

The first game of the doubleheader features a civil war in Lousville taking on Kentucky. Everyone expected Kentucky(36-2) to make it this far, few felt Louisville could do this however. Louisville(30-9) won the Big East and has had little trouble thus far in the tournament, similar to last year's champion Connecticut. The Huskies won the tournament, then eased through the tournament led by Kemba Walker.

This Louisville team is quite a bit better then the team who lost to Kentucky back on December 31st, by seven points. Even then Louisville was fourth-ranked in the country. What wasn't there back then was the defensive stature that head coach Rick Pitino has installed now. Kentucky has had little trouble with the tournament so far, easily beating Baylor in the regional final. Nobody has really given them any competition so far. Louisville will. Expect a great game, one which will go back and forth for most of the way, until the end when Kentucky pulls away with freshman Anthony Davis being the key.

Ohio State faces Kansas in the second game. All along I had Kansas and Kentucky making the championship game with the Wildcats taking it. I still feel the same way. Kansas(31-6) is the more solid of the two teams. Not only because of Thomas Robinson and Tyshon Taylor but because of the supporting cast. Ohio State has a great cast around Jared Sullinger and Marshawn Thomas, but not as good overall as the Jayhawks. Now I have been wrong, many times, I just feel Kansas with Elijah Johnson, Jeff Withey, Travis Relaford, enjoys the better supporting cast.

The Buckeyes won't go down easy, though. This game has a strong chance of reaching overtime, with how evenly the two teams match up. Sullinger and Thomas will need to slow down Robinson in the middle to win. Point guard Jon Craft will need to outplay Taylor. Not going to happen. Kansas wins.

NIT Championship

March 28th 2012 16:40
Minnesota continues to surprise. This time the Golden Gophers defeated NIT favorite Washington, 68-67 in overtime. Minnesota led the game nearly from the start to the finish. Stanford in the other semifinal whipped Massachusetts, 74-64.

Stanford(25-11) in their own way have been a surprise in this tournament. I for one, didn't expect the Cardinal to do much here. Stanford is winning with a simple outside-inside formula. Josh Owens is dominating down low, and the guys on the wing are knocking down shots when called upon. Owens scored 15 points and 12 rebounds in the Cardinal's victory over UMass. Anthony Brown also picked a good time to step up for the team in scoring 18 points, his career best. Stanford now faces a team who is playing its best basketball of the year in Minnesota.

Minnesota(23-14) nearly let a win slip away in the waning moments only to hold on and force overtime, then finally defeat Washington on Tuesday. The Golden Gophers are just out-coaching their opponents. Head coach Tubby Smith, is talioring the teams game-plan to match the strengths of the opposing club, and just out-playing them. He doesn't have the best basketball players on this team, but he has them believing now. Andre Hollins was the star on Tuesday, in scoring 20 points for the team. Minnesota is winning games, without their top two players in Ralph Sampson III and Trevor Mbawke who were both lost to injury.

It will be difficult to pick against Minnesota again. This team had no right beating a team of stars like Washington has, yet they found a way. Exhaustion will play a factor in the title game as four of the Gophers starters played 40 minutes or more in Tuesdays win. Stanford is sitting pretty in this regard, going eight deep with no starter amassing more then 33 minutes. Stanford will pull away from a sluggish Minnesota team in the final 10 minutes of the game en route to the victory.

NCAA Basketball Talk 3-28

March 28th 2012 15:26
Martin in at South Carolina: Former Kansas State head coach Frank Martin is the new head coach for South Carolina. The Gamecocks of the SEC, finished with just 10 wins last season. Kansas State advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament before falling to Syracuse. A purported rift between Martin and Kansas State AD John Currie was rumored to be the reason for the coaches departure. Martin signed a six-year contract with South Carolina worth $12.3 million. Martin had a record of 117-54 while at Kansas State.

NIT, CBI: The PAC-12 nearly had the championship in the NIT to theirselves, though Washington fell to Minnesota, 68-67. Stanford held their end of the bargain in defeating Massachusetts. The final is scheduled for Thursday. In the CBI, Washington State defeated Pittsburgh in game one of the best of three series, game two is coming up tonight.

Illinois job?: The Ohio Bobcats head coach John Groce is in talks to become the new Illinois head coach. Ohio nearly upended North Carolina in the elite 8 before falling apart down the stretch. Now the Bobcats head man is on the short list of many teams looking for a new coach. Illinois was already turned down by VCU head coach Shaka Smart and Butler head coach Brad Stevens. They fired Bruce Weber just before the season ended.

Final four: We are just three days away from the final four beginning. Great games await us. Louisville vs Kentucky in the opener, and Ohio State vs Kansas in the night-cap.

NIT Final Four

March 27th 2012 16:40
For all the PAC-12's faults this year, the conference has fared well in the lesser tier tournaments. Two conference members are in the NIT final four, and another is in the CBI best-of-three series championship in Washington State.

Stanford and Washington are those two in the NIT final four

Final Four Participants

March 26th 2012 00:53
Both games scheduled for next week, are rematches of games previously played this season. Kentucky defeated Louisville, 69-62 back on December 31st. Now the surprising Cardinal earned a rematch. Kansas defeated Ohio State, 78-67 on December, 10th. Though the Buckeyes were missing Jared Sullinger in this game. Sullinger is set to play this time around versus Kansas star Thomas Robinson in the middle.

Louisville and Kentucky kick off the action, followed by the Buckeyes and Jayhawks tangling once again. The games will be played in New Orleans.

A great doubleheader should be ahead of us today, just like yesterday's games where Ohio State and Louisville clinched berths in the Final Four.

Baylor(30-7) faces top-seeded Kentucky (35-2) in the South Regional Final. When looking at this game, out of all the teams Kentucky could face, Baylor matches up very well. If the Bears can get Anthony Davis in foul trouble then they could finally make the final four. Perry Jones III and Marcus Heslip have been playing great here in this tournament. Quincy Acy is another big body the Bears can throw at Kentucky. The Wildcats will prevail though the game is sure to go to the end

Saturday's regional finals

March 24th 2012 15:36
The first game of the day is one I am sure not many people expected to see. Florida(26-10) facing Lousville(29-9) in the West region. Florida knocked off Marquette and Louisville slowed down top-seed Michigan State on Thursday. I have picked against both teams all tournament long, and they continue to win. Louisville wins with great defense, and Florida does a little bit of the same. Don't expect lots of points here. The Cardinal will prevail, sending coach Rick Pitino to the final four once again.

Baylor vs Xavier: Baylor(29-7) taking on Xavier(23-12) in an interesting matchup. Baylor led by Perry Jones III should have his hands full with a very athletic Xavier squad. Xavier rallied to defeat Lehigh in a game that showed just how gritty this team is. I like Baylor to pull out the victory in the end.

Kentucky vs Indiana: A rematch of a game played back in November, that saw Indiana pull out an one-point victory on a last second shot by Christian Watford. Kentucky(33-2) has since lost just once in the SEC championship game to Vanderbilt. Now the Wildcats look to avenge this loss. Indiana(27-8) doesn't have the bodies to hang in there with Kentucky on a neutral court. The Wildcats win

Syracuse vs Wisconsin: The top seed and the fourth seed in the East Region. Syracuse(33-2) continues to find ways to win. They were ahead of Kansas State almost wire to wire in Saturday's win. Now they face a team in Wisconsin(26-9) who has the defensive talent that can slow this Syracuse squad down. The Badgers best player is Jordan Taylor, he and Syracuse guard Scoop Jardine will have a battle. Look for Wisconsin to pull out the minor upset.

Cincinnati vs Ohio State: The second seed in the East, and sixth-seed face off here. Could we have an all Big Ten regional final in the East? Very possible. Ohio State (29-7) has caught fire as of late this season, while Cincinnati(26-10) is tearing it up. Both teams are hot. The Bearcats have the bodies down low to slow down Ohio State's Jared Sullinger in the middle. I see this as a game which will be won by the team that has the better shooting day. Ohio State has the better shooters. Buckeyes win
