A New Guard Is Needed

November 30th 2006 02:43
A recent political cartoon of Kim Beazley depicting him as a balloon full of air said what people have been thinking. He is an old windbag with nothing to say. Except when he gives brilliant losing speeches on federal election nights. The Labor party spin is that leadership speculation is a media beat up and a distraction from the real job of beating Howard. However. there is nothing to distract away from as people stopped listening to Beazley ages ago. The Labor Party has rocks in its head if it continues down this path and deserves what they get even though its supporters don't deserve a party going no where and another term of a very Conservative government. If Wayne Swan and others don't undermine them, a team of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard is a great balance. Rudd is a perfect antidote to Howard. He will wipe away the Latham memories and Christians and families will have confidence in him. He has good economic credentials from his time in the Goss government and he has vast knowledge of foreign affairs and security matters. And most of all he will win over the all important Queensland vote needed if they are to win power. If you had a problem in your electorate, who would you go to in order to get it fixed and seen to, Beazley or Rudd? I know who I'd choose. The one that's a good talker and a doer.

BAD BUSH

November 6th 2006 23:47
The US votes this week. As scandals of impropriety and immorality abound Republicans are having their own stones thrown back at them as they can no longer live in glass houses and preach about their version of morality while living double lives. As we all know the US is all about smoke and mirrors. However the paradoxical thing about the US is that clarity catches up with them at sometime eg Watergate, Monicagate. If the polls are correct the Republican Party are set to lose control of the House of Representatives.

The Democrats will then go to town. The first thing the Democrats will do is open a congressional investigation into the conduct of the White House. They will dig to see if George W and his colleagues have behaved unethically, immorally, and illegally. What really was behind going to war with Iraq? What's going on in Guantanamo Bay? What inhumane treatment have they measured out to prisoners? And will there will be a stench of corruption that involves money, big money?

When these questions are answered it will be a huge historical moment in history as the Bush Republican government will be scrutinized and held to account.

PETER GARRETT FOR PM

October 26th 2006 01:36
What a great day it will be for Australia if former Midnight Oil lead singer and now Labor Federal Member Peter Garrett ever becomes Prime Minister of Australia. How awe inspiring this will be? The thing you have to love about him, is that he is a passionate advocate and campaigner on a range of contemporary Australian and global issues.

As the dynamic front-man and co-lyricist for 26 groundbreaking years in Midnight Oil they confronted many issues through their protest songs and benefit shows. Significantly they brought issues to prominence by protesting at Jabiluka in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park, the anti-Exxon performance on a truck-top in the streets of New York and the 'sorry suits' performance at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games closing ceremony. These moments will always be imprinted in our minds and psyche.

Both Garrett and the Oils were known for their fierce independent stance and active support of a range of contemporary concerns including the plight of homeless youth, indigenous people's rights and the huge commitment to the protection of the environment.

Garrett served two terms as president of the Australian Conservation Foundation and is now the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Reconciliation and the Arts. He is married with three teenage children.

These commitments say a a lot about Garrett and indicate he is a modern day crusader and vibrant thinker who has talent, creativity and a huge intellectual capacity and most importantly he cares about people and the world we live in.

Imagine having an Australian leader with these characteristics who can see further than his front nose? As well as seeing to our environment and our energy needs, he would address issues concerning the 3R's, Reconciliation, Refugees and the Republic in a way that takes a holistic and positive approach. Australia would soon gets its reputation back as a good global citizen and I am sure he would come up with a whole range of creative ideas that address many disturbing trends such as the increasing gap between the poor and affluent and ethnic marginalization.

Australia needs Garrett. The Labor Party needs Garrett.
It has been said why isn't Garrett screaming high and low about different issues that have arisen - issues he may once have spoken out about?
My take is that Garrett is using this time to settle in, to learn and understand parliamentary processes and to serve his NSW electorate. He is a smart guy. He is probably being prudent.

The only thing holding Garrett back from leading Australia in the future will
be the Labor Party. Man if he gets going. Australia will not be able to resist his inspirational mind and outlook.

We need Garrett. Vote 1 for Garrett for PM.

SELLING SEXY KIDS

October 11th 2006 03:14
Not a word, story or comment is to be found in Brisbane’s Courier Mail on the Australian Institute’s latest report ‘Corporate Paedophilia’ which discusses the sexualization of children in advertising. The Institute brings to task retailers David Jones and Myers for their consistent portrayal of children in a manner that makes them appear sexy. Why has the Courier Mail omitted this important public news story when ABC radio news and current affairs discussed the issue in detail? Is it because the Courier Mail could lose advertising revenue from these huge advertisers? Have they been warned off? So much for free press in democratic Australia.

According to the report, the sexualization of Australian children for corporate profit is increasing and exposes children to a wide range of risks from a young age. This is a timely report, as a society we know this is true, we actually identify this is happening at both a subconscious or conscious level. However we are numb to the fact, as we are bombarded with so many images, so much social change and so much rampant consumerism, that we can’t think straight anymore. We as consumers go along with the big con of buying sexy clothing for our children marketers have manipulated us to buy. And then we are flat out trying to make our children feel good about themselves

Beazley and Australian Values

September 26th 2006 07:08
Recently on the fifth anniversary of September 11, Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley proposed that people coming to Australia should sign a ‘values’ statement. What brought this about? It seems that Beazley had learnt that the Howard Government was about to release a new citizenship statement that included ‘new citizens must pass an English test and learn about Australian values’. So not to be outdone Beazley thought he would push the ‘them and us line’ about what it is to be a fair dink-um Aussie.

Many of his party were horrified, as they knew this type of rhetoric actually alienates rather than unites and says, ‘our values are better than yours’. They also knew that Beazley was on shaky ground as for years no one has been able to come up with Australian values that mean all to everybody. That is why respect for the rule of law and democracy is often all we can require of people

Greek Sweets

September 18th 2006 04:07
Even as a third generation Australian Greek girl growing up in inner city Brisbane in a Big Queenslander we always had Greek biscuits in the house. From a young age, I would help mum make biscuits, even though I would get in her way. Spilling the sesame seeds or getting icing sugar all over me. And throughout my life I too have always made tons of Greek biscuits and I really make them just to give away. The ceremony of giving someone a plate of hand made biscuits spreads a lightness of being; goodwill and a connection that makes one feel good to be alive. People think they are hard to make but they are easy and they last for ages. The most sought after recipe I am asked for is ‘Kourabiethes’.
So be my guest and enjoy the experience of making them.

hi deorre
in reading your postings I think you are very nice fellow with a kind spirit. I like what you wrote to the blog with the american flag concerning the elections. Mine was the first comment as anonymous. We in Australia can't get over the fact that Americans think they are the ants pants
eg they have got it all together, they save the world etc,

Brenton,

I like what you write. hey you should write a blog on what these guys would say to the Western world - imagine Jesus.
Could you imagine Jesus coming back in Eastern Garb
Just think of the creative interviewing techniques the west would use on him.

My little Mantra at the moment is

'infinite love and gratitude'

I use it to ward of bad thoughts.

It tides me over.

deorre,
I like what you write. I tend to have a similar philosophy.
I feel that the Western world is obsessed with the notion of achievement - the notion of winners/losers. The recent movie 'Little Miss Sunshine' gives you a lot to think about in this regard.
