Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

Songs that Bring You Down

September 22nd 2007 20:08
Yesterday's post got me to thinking about depressing songs. There's no shortage of sad songs about rainy days and lovers who don't bring flowers. And then there are songs that truly bring the pain -- songs so despairing they bring on the waterworks and might even make us wonder why we even bother....

Here are my picks:
'Brick' - Ben Folds Five
'Somebody' - Depeche Mode
"Sometimes It Hurts" - Stabbing Westward
"Adam's Song" - Blink 182
'Hallelujah' - Jeff Buckley
"Luka" - Suzanne Vega
"No Surprises"-Radiohead
"Never Had No One Ever" - The Smiths
"At Seventeen"- Janis Ian
"Tears in Heaven"- Eric Clapton
"Vincent (Starry Starry Night)" Don McLean
"Hurt"- Johnny Cash and NIN
"Lost Cause" - Beck
'Naked as We Came' - Iron & Wine

Brick definitely blankets me with sorrow.

"We Rule the School," and "The Chalet Line" by belle and Sebastian is extremely depressing, as well as "Breathe Me" by Sia.

And who can forget "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap. It's magical sadness.

Dear Mr President by Pink is one which the kids love but is a real downer for me.

How about In The Ghetto by Elvis or on a lighter note(?) that song from M.A.S.H - suicide is painless.

I prefer to ascribe to Jeff Lynne and ELO personally - "Don't Bring Me Down" . . . . . . Grrroooossss

Cheers

"Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin and "Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics, I heard those two back to back on an oldies station and almost had to call a shrink!!!!!! Those to followed by "Tears in Heaven" would put me over the edge.

MIs,

'Song Sung Blue' by Neil Diamond makes me physically ill, does that count?

I thought it was just me. I change it every time I hear it or see the video!

How about In The Ghetto by Elvis or on a lighter note(?) that song from M.A.S.H - suicide is painless.
Really dig your wicked sense of humor......

I prefer to ascribe to Jeff Lynne and ELO personally - "Don't Bring Me Down" . . . . . . Grrroooossss
Me too! Wow thanks for the time travel back to the 70s.... They were wonderful in concert back in the day!

Good to see you!

Starry starry night is OK by me as is Lilla's 'doesn't like it' Neil Diamond. I'm not into those eras much.

Hi Mis

'In the living years' always brings tears to my eyes.

There are lots of sad songs out there... but even some happy songs that can bring you down... damn that memory bank!

Hiya Mis...

Many songs named here that make me sad (cannot listen to 'Tears From heaven' and 'In The Living Years')...

What's the difference betwen making sad and bringing down? I'm not sure if they bring me down...I tune out and turn off if it's a misery guts depressing song!...but...sad songs say so much...

Just heard 'Eleonor Rigby' on the radio...the tune is gorgeous but the lyrics are a killer...as is 'Killer Queen'.

I'm a twerp but Sinead O'Connor's version of 'Nothing Compares To You' just tugs at my heartstrings.

As did Martika's 'Toy Soldiers'.

...and in now way does this song make me sad or bring me down but it does make me want to cry... Cat Stevens version of 'Morning has Broken'.

...Britney Spears version(?) of 'I Love Rock and Roll' totally depresses me. This. Was. A. Crime.

Hope you're well hon...crank up the happy hormones songs!

The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve. I think that's the actual name of the song. It has such a hopeless feel about it! "The drugs don't work, they just make me worse, but I know I'll see your face again". Makes me want to get cocooned in a doona and stay there for a week.

Great post,

Michaelie

You are so right about "In the Living Years!" BooHoo!
I hate it when the happy songs make you all misty..... I am generally a positive person but gosh darn it..... sometimes I am in an elevator and a bad rendition of a great song comes on and it just brings me to tears!

Hiya Dusk

(cannot listen to 'Tears From heaven' and 'In The Living Years')...
Me either!

I will have to think about that.... There are some songs that are written to be sad and have the opposite affect on me. Instead of being sad...I roll my eyes and think about how irritating they are. Great example the horrible country song "Buterfly Kisses"

Just heard 'Eleonor Rigby' on the radio...the tune is gorgeous but the lyrics are a killer...as is 'Killer Queen'.
Agreed. Many of the Decemberists songs have that same effect

I'm a twerp but Sinead O'Connor's version of 'Nothing Compares To You' just tugs at my heartstrings. As did Marika's Toy Soldiers
Good Lord...get out the anti-depressants.... both of those are difficult for me.

Cat Stevens version of 'Morning has Broken'.
When I was a little girl...my mom played this song over and over. Always made me misty.

...Britney Spears version(?) of 'I Love Rock and Roll' totally depresses me. This. Was. A. Crime.

HAHAHAHAHA!

Hope you're well hon...crank up the happy hormones songs!
I am great and hope all is well with you and no worries .... I don't play "Melancholy Baby' for long :0)

"Bobby Jean" - album track off Born in the USA - Bruce Springsteen.

When I was pregnant I would get teary whenever I heard Creed's "With Arms Wide Open". Not so much now that I'm not pregnant so I blame hormones for that one.

Love & stuff
