Ramble On - Or How I Get Through This Life

Songs for the Apocalypse

October 6th 2007 03:12
Today I decided that I would pay my cell phone bill in person (something I don't usually do). As I drove up to the store I noticed throngs of many angry customers standing outside the store. I noticed large signs on the windows that said "Network Down". Customers were shouting at the staff. I know that this is just an example of the power and limitations of wireless devices and networks but jeez give it a break. It ain't the end of times...God almighty it is just a cellphone.

Call your sponsors, I think that consumers have become addicts. I notice that they always have them close to the body, even if it's only to look at the time, It appears that the closer people keep their cell phones, the more paranoid they get. How many of us have checked our phone for a missed call, a voice mail or a text message even though you are absolutely sure that no one has attempted to reach you?

How many of you check the volume of your ringer, even though you know it is set at the loudest possible setting with the most annoying song you could download off the internet, just to "be sure"? Technology is akin to crack; both cost about the same even with all those "free" minutes phone companies supposedly offer.

When someone's cell phone dies in the middle of the day and they are unable to get back to their charger, they begin to twitch and tap their fingers until their leg starts to jiggle. They are just jonesing for their next fix.

Now, I am not telling you to turn off the cell phone and "enjoy the simple life." I realize none of you would listen, but what I am saying is that although cell phones are great and allow us to fully enjoy life - there comes a time when what you are doing at this moment needs to outweigh the possibility of what the cell phone might offer in the near future.

Needless to say I just got back into my car and drove away. North Korea can paralyze the US by just taking down the wireless towers. You know....

So it got me to thinking..... here is the listing of some of my favorite "end of days songs"

1. It's the End of the World: R.E.M.
2. The End of the World: Skeeter Davis
3. Until the End of the World: U2
4. Highway to Hell: ACDC
5. Call of Kthulu: Metallica
6. Black Angel's Death Song: The Velvet Underground
7. Getting Better: The Beatles
8. How's it Gonna End?: Tom Waits
9. Tiny Apocalypse: David Byrne
10. ...And Soon the World Will Cease to Be: Amon Amarth

or maybe Party Hard by Andrew W. K.

I only use my cell phone for emergencies. I hate them really. My mum always says that the next generation are going to be born with them attached to their wrists.

You know of all those songs l've only heard of the Beatles one. I think maybe I need to expand my horizons. I love ballet music. I guess somehow I've missed the rest.

Hey Mis

A couple that come to mind would be:

In the Year 2525 – Zeager and Evans
End of The World – Herman’s Hermits
The Morning After - Maureen McGovern
The Sounds Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkle
and Eve Of Destruction - Barry McGuire
Best throw in a little 'I Will Survive' - just to keep the beat a little up-tempo.

As for your phone - perhaps globally we should declare an international cell (or mobile) phone free day. Now there's something that will get people talking.

Best thoughts as always

Mis, I don't have a cell phone and do not want one.

The Sounds of Silence does it for me, as for Mr. Nice Guy.

I love the imagery, sorry it has taken me so long to get here, I keep losing my way, I'm sure that's leading into a song.

Whenever I hear REM I wish my world would come to an end.

And I hate it when my phone rings. I was one of the first to get a mobile (cell) phone. So all my uni mates would ring me to see where we were and what we were doing. But it got so bad that I would get calls when I was on holidays "So what's happening tonight?"
"Who cares! Bugger off!"

So I'm officially scarred now.

Love & stuff
