something disturbing about our youth

February 22nd 2008 01:39
The other night we went out to the local as usual.
First thing we noticed was all the new younger, more eager faces we could recognize them instantly; they were the “newbie’s” or the new 18 year olds just pumping from the excitement of being out and out of control.
These newbie’s were fresh from their massive birthday bashes; they wore grins that were testaments to their pride of finally coming of age; they were drinking to get drunk; they were raging as if the world was ending.
This influx of young drinkers happens every year, it is never really noticeable except for the rowdier groups of people that fuel themselves with unbelievable amounts of alcohol, our group of “oldies” always end up reluctantly relating to the short skirts of the girls and slicked, spiked hair of the guys.

The middle of the night though saw an unprecedented occurrence something that really saw all of us disgusted.
We were seated on the lounges just by the bar and we saw a newbie and his mate, this newbie looked a bit different, his walk seemed to be interrupted by a disability (which we later discovered was cerebral palsy).
Now just as I was thinking how truly wonderful it was to see another new 18 year old, despite his disability, enjoying the rites of passage just like everyone else, something happened.
An older guy, about 22 pushed him hard and spoke with a slurred assurance
“Get out of my face you idiot, your falling all over me you almost spilled my beer!”
Now I saw this for myself and let me tell you there was no falling on anybody, the bloke was choosing an easy target to illuminate his “superiority”.
The young guy just tried to keep walking but the other guy just persisted, this time using a comical depreciating tone, trying to gain the attention of all that were looking on.

“Look you’re so out of it you idiot get the hell out”
That young boy must have left because I did not see him in the following hours; he did not get to enjoy his first time piling out of a crowded pub into the cool air; he did not get to spend the time in the taxi talking gibberish with his mates.
This really upset me, this poor kid just out for a good time was rudely and abruptly ridiculed and teased, actions you would only expect from an ignorant child and not a grown, mature adult.
So just a message to the young boy, or any who have faced a similar situation: there are people out there who want your fun loving face out and about, partying it up with the rest of us, and as for all those who are ignorant enough to consider a disability as some kind of curse, please don’t come out any more until you can act in mature manner, or at least act your age!
