Soiling the Good Name
August 22nd 2008 07:38
Alright, time to kick off another rant.Today I'll be ranting about a problem that seems to have been around for a long time. People who ruin the good name of things. People who join groups with good intentions and give that group a bad name. I'f you're not sure what I mean, no worries, I'll clarify when we get into the core of it. For the record, this does have to do with a recent event in the news. I actually planned to do the entire rant about the event, but then thought I could do much more with it. So you could say that the event (Which I will get into, don't worry.) inspired this rant. So let us jump into this.
Edgy swear warning, don't like swearing then skip 'em or leave.
There have always been people with good intentions. People who try to make the world a better place to live in. There are however, a few bad apples who join the cause then try and twist it to their own needs, to their own agenda. I could just about say that for every good cause, there's a seed of corruption that will try to twist it. It's really one of the things in life that truly bothers me. They way I see it is if the world is a bit better of a place, you wouldn't have to worry about your own 'agenda' as much. Thus the world would be more enjoyable for us all. I do suppose that you need a fair balance of good and bad, but it seems there is just a wee too much bad.
I think the two biggest 'victims' to the 'good name soiling' are politics and religion. Granted some of them are corrupt to start with, and corrupt through and through. I think corruption in both of these is a big issue, seeing as they affect nearly all off us in one way or another. It pains me to see people in general trying to make the world a better place and they get these bad apples who ruin their name. There are a few organizations and a few people that I'm going to call up to the chopping block for a good bashing.
Westborough Baptist Church
I'm not sure if you've heard of these guys or not. They're religious fanatics, which I don't have a problem with. The problem is that they REALLY push the damn envelope. I think they're about off their rockers, if you know what I mean. For those that don't know about the group, I'll give you a little info on them. They're based I believe in Southern California. They're lead by Fred and Shirley(?) Phelps. The church seems dedicated to protesting war by picketing at soldiers funerals with signs like "Thank God for dead soldiers" and other similar things. They're also noted for being extreme homophobes. They state that the USA is in the distress it is because we allow homosexuals. They state we're 'Invoking God's wrath'.
I have no clue what these peoples' problem is, but it seems like they have their head way up their ass. I'm against the war, but honestly, I see the picketing they do at funerals as disrespectful. There are other ways to protest than shitting on someones' private life. Bad thing is, they do it withing the restriction of the law, so there's not much that can be done about it.
There was a recent incident in Canada, a politician, (I think) Tim McLean was brutally attacked and murdered on a bus. The church actually went to Canada to picket his funeral because of his stance on homosexual rights and marriage. That's really pushing it there. Going to another country to stir up shit? Feeling brave, eh? I see it as disrespectful on so many levels. I always try to see things from two different perspectives, but I'm honestly not going to try and defend these people. I believe they're contributing to giving Christianity and religion as a whole a bad name.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (A.k.a.: PETA)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, seems like a decent cause right? Well, to an extent it is. However we have a few bad, bad apples in this group. I would like to say that yes there are people in this group with their head on strait, (the people I'm not bashing in other words), and I've no problem with those people. It's the ones which take the hypocritical actions and have severely un-logical opinions that I have issues with.
I can't say too much, as it is a bit hard to tell who is crazy and who has their head on strait in this situation. I can say that the people with the right ideas SERIOUSLY need to break the hell away from the ones that ruin their good name. I can say that I'm seriously straddling the fence with this case, as on the one hand you do have members with decent, logical beliefs, and on the other you seem to have a bunch of power tripping corrupts. Most of the commercials and the points they try to make are about stupid really. As for their whole stance on things, they're in league with the WBC I talked about earlier.
There is more that I can say opinion wise, but I think I'll keep that to myself for now. Perhaps another day I'll make a revisit to this particular group. (Also I need to cut a few things out for pace, as I feel this rant will be long enough as it stands now.)
Anyone that was wanting to hear a deeper discussion, I apologize, I may make a revisit sometime in the future.
The Church of Scientology
Everyone has a right to believe what they want. That's not a big deal (so long as it dosen't get out of hand..). But in this case I smell a scam. I would try and fill in the unfamiliar with a few details, but to be honest I've no real clue what these people believe. The thing is, they require you to pay large amounts of money for bits of information. They require years of service and donations before you're allowed to see the 'sacred text'. There's a bit of a problem with that. Here's the thing: Ask a Jewish leader about their religion, they'll tell you. Ask a Muslim leader about their religion, they'll tell you. Ask a Christian leader about their religion, they'll tell you. Same goes for Hindus, Buddhists, Daoists, Taoists, Atheists, Agnostics, any branch of Christianity and other related religion, Satanists, any other religion. Ask a Scientoligiest leader about their religion and they'll tell you...as soon as your check clears.
That's the problem, they charge you for information about the religion. They charge you for scared text. (Which I think few people have ever seen). They charge you for everything. If you try and speak out about them, or question them too much, they try and get rid of you. In my book, that says scam. That says conspiracy. Seems like they're out to get cash, and by saying they're a religion, they're tax exempt. There's a whole ass load of suspicious shit about this 'religion'. They make me mad because it really adds to the religion paranoia as a whole. They're seriously adding to the shit, not cleaning it up.
Moving on...
Finial thoughts and notes
I was actually going to do a bit on politics, but I believe it is best saved for another day. I can say however that if you have good intentions, to watch out for people who might try to ruin you. I think it's sad that we live in a situation such as that. Where people cannot truly try to improve the world without someone trying to shit on their name. However I do understand that in this day and age, people need to be kept in check, you never know what they are truly trying to do. I do believe if they're trying to do the right thing however, there will be no problems as far as the group being corrupt. (Unless you get corrupt members like PETA).
That's all I have to say for now. I hope I've not stepped on anyone's toes, but I'm bound to have. As I said before, if I do step on your toes, you're probably on the wrong side of the fence with me.
This is Anthoric the Angry saying: You can try and make the world a better place, but watch your ass, someone might try and fuck you over. If you're truly trying to help, don't let them ruin your good name.
