Women in the Men's Toilet

August 29th 2006 20:05
!

While this is more lavish than your average Underground toilet, it is the only photo I have. It actually belonged to the great Sherlock Holmes. He would've spent plenty of time solving crime mysteries there!

Yesterday after the Notting Hill Carnival I made my way to an Underground Toilet in London to "Drain the Spuds". The presence of an attendant is not uncommon in London, no matter how poor standard the facilities are. It is difficult to know how much these people get paid, but they are usually of an ethnic minority and are usually mature in age.

This time yesterday it was a female who was walking around and standing at the urinals. Don't worry, I assume the fact she had a uniform on, that she was legitimate. It just seems a little strange to have a female standing so close to the action. Is nowhere safe from the prying eyes of the fairer sex?

At Regent Park there is an office which comes off the urinal. This lady sits at the desk and I walked past still putting the trouser snake away when I saw here looking in. Just as well Johnson was back at home base, because it could've been embarrassing.

I have also had a female cleaner in mopping the floors, but the lady yesterday was just standing watching without a care in the world. Guys being the laid back creatures just nodded and carried on with business. I am thinking, if there was a similar role reversal, the attendant would've been given an ear ful

Public Nudity

August 28th 2006 23:01

My experiences in Europe have opened my eyes to different cultures and the way that certain daily practices are considered fundamental in some cultures, yet in others they are frowned upon. This is especially true with public nudity. The beaches are full in the height of summer and comparing beaches in New Zealand with those in Europe are like chalk and cheese. Firstly I am not saying that I disapprove of nudity on beaches, but it takes getting used to.

In Sweden when I went on a recent holiday to the beach, I was amazed by the overall appearance of females on the beach. As a population they are very rich in slender blonde genes with fine facial features. The Swedes in general mainly wore bikinis although there were some people who went topless. Nothing is wrong with this. I just hate people who obviously partake in this practice looking for attention, and cringe if you lay your eyes anywhere near them. Is this not the reason for them partaking in such a practice?

This public nudity is also apparent in other parts of Europe, although it varies depending on the culture of people in that particular area. I recently visited Switzerland and they are far more reserved as people. They do not have as fine features as their northern European counterparts, but they more conservative as a result. They also wear far more on the beaches Do you think that public nudity is a sign of an attractive population?

This raises the interesting question of whether public nudity is part of a culture and embedded into young Europeans as children as being acceptable behaviour or do you think it is more of sexual practice seeking attention of other bathers as a grown up?

What is different about being naked in a sauna compared with naked on a beach?

Do so many Europeans not wear sunglasses on a beach to not appear to be perverts? Or do they just not want tan lines?

The London Underground or Tube as it is colloquially referred to is an interesting place with so many different people onboard. It is an odd scenario with people from different backgrounds sharing a confined space for such a short period in time, when usually these people would never mix socially and will never meet again. The common bond is transportation and getting from A to B. This means that for most it is a time to put in the earphones and listen to music, some read books or newspapers, others sleep, but some find it a time to make up for lost time and further their knowledge of their partner.

This act of Public Display of Affection is frowned upon amongst the traditional types of people like myself. Yet in the Underground where everyone avoids eye contact, let alone talking, no one batters an open eyelid at the concept of two people kissing and going at it with one another. I find this concept bizarre, as in most public places these people would be too embarrassed to try such pursuits, yet in the sanctuary of the tube where even looking at someone who is a stranger is a no no, kissing a partner is considered fine. This to me, stinks of hypocrisy!

My attitude to Public Display of Affection stems from my traditional upbringing and the usual vulnerability to jest which such a practice usually encourages. The usual comments like "Get a room you two!" "I'm trying to eat here" and "It's a bit early in the day for that sort of carry on" spring to mind. It is a way of chopping down society to the standards and practices of the majority downunder, yet in europe is considered acceptable.

The practice of PDA is socially awkward for myself as it is always something that you avoid watching, but can't when such an act is thrust almost literally, in your face! This hatred to such an act may be a result of getting older or simply jealousy, but if the transvestite sitting on one side of you and the football hooligan on the other is going to say anything, then it is my responsiblity to stand up to these people.
