For quite a long time now, La Liga has been a two horse race between Real Madrid and Barcelona with Barcelona dominating La Liga - and Europe - for the last three years. This year, though, things might change a little bit as there are 5 teams who could disrupt the rhythm of Real Madrid and/or Barcelona this season. Here is a short look at these 5 teams.

Athletic Bilbao - Bilbao are always a tough opponent. Players like Llorente, Javi Martinez, Iker Muniain et al always make it tough for the opponent. Add to that their new signing, Ander Herrera - the very talented Basque player - and you have a potential game-changer at your disposal. In defense, they have Mikel San Jose and Fernando Amorebieta - two very influential and great defenders. This team, in my opinion, can defeat ANY team in La Liga.

Malaga - Malaga have signed some good players like Cazorla, Van Nistelrooy, Mathijsen, Toulalan, Joaquin, Isco (hailed as the next best thing of Spain), Monreal, Diego Buonanotte et al. They also have players like Demichelis, Julio Baptista and the very promising academy player, Juanmi. There still might be more reinforcements added as Sheikh Mansoor looks to make his Malaga a force to be reckoned with. And their manager, of course, is the astute tactician who is known as Manuel Pellegrini. So we can expect some great things from Malaga this season.

Atletico Madrid - Atleti have sold some key players this season. But I think they will be better off this season as they already have an able replacement for De Gea in Sergio Asenjo (this guy was once called the next Casillas). Atleti have also signed Arda Turan - a very creative attacking midfielder. And if Atleti somehow get Radamel Falcao - who, reportedly, has agreed personal terms with Atleti - they are going to be some force. Atleti have also signed Miranda from Sao Paulo - a World Class defender who can be 'THE WALL' of Atleti's defense which has been blatantly exposed by opposition attackers in the past. If Atleti can lure some good back-ups and perhaps a good deep-midfielder, they are certainly going to be very close to the top 4 spots - or even in it - come May 2012.

Valencia - Valencia are now even stronger than their 2009-10 team which had David Villa and David Silva in it. They now have Soldado, Pablo Hernandez, Aritz Aduriz, Dani Parejo (very under-rated, but a great midfielder), Sergio Canales (on loan from Real Madrid for 2 years), Ever Banega, Adil Rami, Juan Mata, Pablo Piatti (a clone of Messi, and actually can be as good as Messi)... With this team, I think they can even upset Real and Barca for the title.

Villarreal - And, of course, there is Villarreal who also have a great team to make La Liga more exciting than last season. Names like Giuseppe Rossi, Nilmar, Borja Valero, Cani, Mattio Musacchio, new-signing Christian Zapata, Marco Ruben and Camunias prove that. This season, though, they don't Santiago Cazorla - their best player after Rossi last season. But that may not be much of a problem as Cani is more than capable of filling the void left by Santi Cazorla. All in all, this Villarreal team are still capable of winning against big teams - and playing attractive football in the process.

Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele: 2 of the World's best holding midfielders
Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele: 2 of the World's best holding midfielders

Ian Holloway, current Blackpool manager once said, "It's all very well having a great pianist playing but it's no good if you haven't got anyone to get the piano on the stage in the first place, otherwise the pianist would be standing there with no bloody piano to play.", in response to the criticism he received for using defensive players in midfield. But alas, very few people realise it.

Since the turn of the millennium, the winners of most major tournament has had a holding midfielder playing a vital role. In the 2002 World Cup, Brazil had an excellent Gilberto Silva, 'The invisible wall', to do all the dirty and unseen work to give the likes of Ronaldinho and more freedom to go forward.

In 2006 World Cup, the ever-so-influential Gennaro Gattuso's, who won the Champions League in 2002–03 and 2006–07 with Milan, lung-bursting contributions and 'take no prisoner' type style helped Italy lift the World Cup.

In the latest 2010 World Cup, it was Sergio Busquets' immense anticipating abilities which played a big role in Spain triumph, especially against Germany in the semi-final when he stopped almost all German counter-attacks single-handed. Also, the 3 league games in which Busquets didn't start this season, Barca have dropped points. Just shows how immense his contribution is to the team.

There are many, many more examples; history is the witness. From Claude Makelele's contribution to Real Madrid's last Champions League triumph to Patrick Vieira's stamp on the Arsenal's 'invincibles' team(which also had Gilberto Silva); it is all clear for us to see that this role is very important and when executed with perfection, can stop the best of attacks to penetrate.

What makes holding midfielders so important?

If asked some young kids that who is the best of his/her favorite team, most would reply an attacker's name. Some may even name a defender, but very few would say their holding midfielder's name. To worsen things up, most kids would claim that the particular CDM player is the worst, or average, of his/her favorite team.

Now, this doesn't mean that CDM players are always the best players and the other position players are inferior(every position has its own importance)- it needs a really good CDM for that - but it just conveys the ignorance, mostly by young kids, towards the player of that position. Most of the dirty work of tackling hard to win back possession before the attack builds up is mostly done by holding midfielders. Yet they go unseen; mainly because most watch the final third action with more interest.

The main reason why a good holding midfielder is important to the team is very simple: win back possession as soon as one can. But executing this is not as simple as it might look. When the opposition midfielder has the ball, the holding midfielder must ensure he/she wins back possession higher up the pitch before the opposition midfielder starts an attack. By this, not only does the opposition attack breaks down before it starts, but it also gives an opportunity to the holding midfielder to launch a quick attack. This also needs tremendous work-rate because the holding midfielder should press higher up the pitch while also making sure he/she guards the 4 defenders behind him.

The only thing which differentiates an excellent holding midfielder to a good holding midfielder is the ability to read the game. This is one of the most important aspect of a holding midfielder, especially in a counter-attack situation. Some holding midfielders have exceptional defensive qualities. But those qualities become limited if his/her anticipation abilities are not as good.

Counter-attacks are one the most difficult things in football to deal with, especially if it's a counter-attack which results from a set-piece - where even defenders go forward to use their aerial abilities in attack. In most cases, it's only the full backs and the holding midfielder staying back at these situations. And it is mostly the holding midfielder winning back possession - holding midfielders anticipation and defensive qualities are better than full backs' in most cases.

What is anticipation? Anticipation is the ability to read what the opposition player(s) might do next. In counter-attack situations, a holding midfielder should figure out what the opposition player with the ball might do next, ie, figure out who he/she may pass to or whether he/she would run with it. This is the ability which puts the holding midfielder in the best place to stop a counter-attack, by either intercepting a pass or by stealing the ball away from the player possessed to ensure the counter-attack doesn't turn into a goal. This ability is just like a mind-reading ability, which very few possess.

The next time you watch a match, concentrate on the midfield battle. And if you have observed right, you will understand the importance of a holding midfielder in the game.

Tonight Real Madrid meet their arch-rivals, Atletico Madrid, in a scintillating Madrid derby. This is the first leg of the Spanish Cup quarter final and it is not going be an easy encounter for both the teams.

Real Madrid are in with a great chance to win the Copa del Rey this year as they have made it to the quarter final of this competition after a reasonably long time. But Madrid should be well aware of the fact that they must be at their best to win against a team which has Reyes, Aguero and Forlan in their strike force.

Madrid will be without Pepe and Higuain. The former will be out for some weeks and the latter will be out for the whole season. It is most likely going to be Benzema leading the line. Benzema has a reasonable scoring record in the Copa del Rey, stamping a hattrick against Levante back in December.

Atletico Madrid also have a great team, with Reyes, Aguero and Forlan as their main men. Their defeat at the Bernebeu during the La Liga game will motivate them more to play better and turn the tables this time around. Both these teams are great attacking teams and it should be worthwhile spending 90 minutes to watch this encounter.

Atletico Madrid Man to watch out - Sergio Aguero

This Argentine magician can do anything with the ball at his feet. A great dribbler and finisher, he can inflict danger to any defense in this World and can score from nowhere. Assisted by Forlan, he becomes even more fierce and can give Carvalho and Albiol a torrid time. If he's given too much freedom to move, Real can wave goodbye to the title.

Real Madrid Man to watch out - Karim Benzema

Second time in a row I have made him the 'man to watch out' because I feel he will break free and that time is very close. We all know what he is capable of. He was a phenomenon back at Lyon and he can be a legend at Real too; but for that to happen his name must hit the scoring chart more often. He has shown glimpses of his capabilities and if today turns out to be his day, no defense in the World can stop him.
