Smoking & Skincare: An Anti-thesis of Beauty
September 8th 2010 02:29
I have read in so many forums or even with some friends the question “how do you stay so young and healthy looking despite your age?” and of course, I tell them why and how I keep myself healthy and young looking. First is healthy lifestyle. I never had any vices (sorry for the brutality of truth) so it’s easier for me.
Smoking and alcohol are among the few vices we have. In some studies, experts have proven that smoking for about 10 years is enough to cause premature wrinkles, other than serious health complications. When smoking, blood vessels in out body and skin narrows down significantly reducing the amount of blood, oxygen and other important nutrients (Vitamin A, D and E) to get into our skin.
As these important nutrients becomes less in our body, our skin is unable and ineffective in producing new skin cells and maintain the concentration of collagen, a connective protein that is in the epidermis. It is the substance responsible in maintaining the plumpness of our skin, as well as making it resilient and elastic.
Smoking in time, diminishes the flow of nutrients to the skin and lowers the levels of collagen in it. The skin in turn loses its elasticity and youthfulness which in turn causes the skin to wrinkle, sag and display the signs of premature skin aging.
So part of achieving great skin is turning away from smoking…good for the skin as well as the lungs.
