Sleepless Nights

Sleepless Nights
It’s past the hour of midnight and I’d really like to know
Why my eyes are wide open and that backache won’t go.
I’m mostly sound asleep well before this time of night,
But the aches and pains I feel, mean things are far from right.
All that pain turns the mind to a much troubled world
Where the flags of peace may never be unfurled
In the face of oppression and some unforgiveable acts
People seeking everywhere to find a peaceful track.
In my mind I see the horrors from the news of today
I think I'm part responsible but can’t take the pain away.
There’s drought and floods and fires, to add to the gloom
Plus inhumane atrocities, it seems it’s all about our doom.
But for all that, the backache slowly loses all its power
And sleep at last comes to me beyond that midnight hour.
I don’t dream of all that misery, the pain that’s all around,
My rest is uninterrupted, and my sleep is safe and sound.
With the coming of the light of day I wonder what’s in store
For future generations, will peace come to the fore?
Or will it simply be more of what we're getting now,
Dressed up in different clothes, like the politicians vows.
No matter what may come our way, we'll do the best we can
To find a life that's safe and tranquil for every kind of man.
