Next Step - Think Past our Thought Past

Future Philosophy

Since when did philosophy become about questions?

We have reached the end of our evolutionary tether.

Now we can wait there, quite conceivably, for an unthinkably long period of time. For we have no evolutionary pressure, no threat, no stimulus, no reason to change. But, if something were to 'catch up' with us, there would be a very short and decisive race to see who will proceed. Alternatively, we might progress by ourselves, by dumb luck, or I should say evolutionary luck.

I believe both were true. our progression shall be of our own accord, but it shall include an evolutionary pressure. We shall create the pressure.

Evolution is an exponential process. Each change comes quicker than the last. Is more swift. is more all-encompassing. Is a more significant change than the last. Each change radically changes the face of the world, while leaving the world intact for those who have not made the advance. Bacteria think they are doing great. Think about it, they don't even know they are the oldest thing which is not related to us. It's been three and a half billion years since eukaryotic cells packed their bags and went their own evolutionary way. That's 3,500,000,000 years ago. "Don't wait for me", said the bacteria, "I'll catch up". Because he knows if he asks you to wait up you're gonna look down at your watch, maybe check your diary and let out a forced sigh. Maybe a breathe in through your teeth, "I dunno buddy, I've kinda gotta... well I'm in a hurry... I mean usually I would wait, but... you know how it is..."

So even if the next step of evolution happens, you might not even know about it. In fact, I'd be really surprised if you did. 3.5 billion years and bacteria don't know they are the first branch off the evolutionary tree?

In my dreams the model for flying is a bit tricky. It's really hard to do, you see. But once you are doing it it is not hard at all. Its as if there's a trick to it. But you forget how to do it. I find it very hard to discipline my mind to get into that headspace where you can fly. And then once you flip over, its easy. In fact saying its easy would misrepresent it. You don't even notice it, you are just flying. One could say that not noticing is the trick.

Forget we're evolving, maybe that will make the thing easier.

Or maybe we'll be stuck in the same place for 3.5 bi years as someone is taking it over and you won't notice...

cheers. Uula

i like your point about the flying. i wonder if you've ever read any Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide). in one of his books (can't remember which one), he suggests much the same. the only thing stopping us flying, is the thought of us hitting the ground. we think we'll hit the ground because deep down, we don't actually believe we can fly. remove the doubt, and you will fly.

one of his character's (Dirk Gently, i think) was running down a hill and tripped over. as he flew thru the air, his thoughts were not of the pain of hitting the ground, but of something else - like the stove still being on. so in that moment, because he wasn't thinking about falling, he found himself flying above the ground.

of course, the moment he realised he was flying he wondered how it could be possible. the moment he wondered this was the moment he hit the ground.

evolution or should i say natural selection is not exponential by nature. Now i can understand why you would make this assumption because in the case of humans the rate of change in our ability to manipulate our environment appears as if it may well be exponential. Blue green algae was the first organism on earth not bacteria. Plus fyi bacteria (generally) have a much higher rate of mutation and obviously have extremely short life cycles so evolutionary change actually occurs at a much greater rate in bacteria than humans or any eukariote for that matter. I think you may confuse some of your ideas when it comes to evolution. The reason why there is a difference between us and bacteria is that we took different evolutionary paths and we fill different ecological niches. Neither bacteria or humans are more evolved or better than the other the are just more evolved in respect to their niche. We can't go inside bacteria infect them and proliferate and bacteria can't hold a spear. But if i had to decide who would win in the end there is no doubt. It is much more concieveable that an extremely virulent and pathogenic bacterium (or virus)will wipe out the human race than humans wiping out bacteria. So who's more evolved than who?
