Only one day to go until THE day of the year. 07/07/07 will break records everywhere with everything. On this day approximately 2.8 billion people are going to marry, some 20.000 are going to cheer for the wallabies when they take on the spring brooks at Telstra Stadium (unfortunately without one of their best players since he had a to much of a hangover when appearing to a training session this week) for the last test before the world cup AND, most important, tomorrow WE ALL will save the world. The concert for a climate in crisis is going to take place all over the world with it’s kick off here at Aussie Stadium, Sydney.

Another big event to tell everyone in the world that we have to act now in order to save our environment. Well, I don’t want to discuss whether it makes sense to do the biggest show on earth from an environmental point of view (just imagine how much energy those shows need…how much water will be wasted (important thing here in Australia) and how much dioxides are going to be released into the air…but, all in the name of the environment. So it’s ok! Actually I’d like to discuss the Aussie related thing on this…meaning, here in Australia, everything has to be big and enormous. ‘We’ want to show the world that we care. That’s why we had the Earth Hour (oooooh what a success. I was sitting at Darling Harbour while it happened. Some of the office buildings really shut everything down. But, thx to the city of Sydney, the “tourist lights” at the Harbour itself continued to shine. Great stuff!) and now we have Live Earth. Well, don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice thing that the Australians always want to make huge steps into the right direction. But the problem over here, in my opinion is, that no one does a little step. For example: Just go to Woolworths, Coles or any other discounter, supermarket, pharmacy…and buy a chocolate bar and water. You will almost ALWAYS get a new plastic bag at the counter. Most of the time even without being asked whether you need one. I really think after four months here I could open a plastic bag discount. And, if you asking how it could be done in an other way – just do your next shopping at Aldi ( I think it’s located at Edgecliff, Paramatta and somewhere else) and go to the counter. There you have to pay for a plastic bag which is, in return, a bag that will last for a few grocery shopping events and will not burst when trying to get out of the bus on the way home. Oh, and of course I have to mention this: Aldi is a German discounter – but anyway, just try it once

- The Aussie way of saying “I don’t wanna see you again” -

Man, that is one thing over that really sucks. That over-politeness. That typical problem in English speaking countries. Polite (or false) till the end. You know, sometimes it’s not that bad just being a little non British or non American. Just say what you think. I mean, you could still say it in a nice way, but simply say it

G’Day dear reader and thanks for coming back to me. Today I really write about an Aussie thing. Your education!

Oh please don’t click on the cross at the right corner immediately. There shouldn’t be a reason for this. I don’t want to tell you that a lot of Aussies I met so far did not had a single clue about my home country or did not know something about the actual political issues going on in the rest of the world. I simply want to discuss something I heard on radio the other day

You've got mail!

June 26th 2007 01:01
First post, first exception. Actually I told you before that I'll blog about the 'strange' Aussie way of life from a European point of view. But unfortunately I have to write in my first post about a phenomenon that is not only Aussie related. Today when I switched on the laptop and checked my mails I had a lot of mails saying something like "I know it's unbelievable, but it works - just try...you have to send this email to 390,493 other people within the next 30 seconds (I might be slightly exaggerating) and when you press F6 the name of the person that loves you will show up at the screen. If you don't do it, you'll have bad luck within all your relationship for at least 5 years..."

I know that's not a new thing, those mails. But I did not receive it only from some random people but also from a lot of my email buddies. And, I tend to not let everyone become a 'mailing-friend'. So that is what brings me to my question. Why do people that I consider at least being a little smart keep on forwarding those mails to me? Is it anxiety? Are they anxious of losing their current partner? Or maybe hope? The hope to find the person that loves them most? Anyway: Both reasons express a kind of desperation

Aussie Aussie Aussie

June 25th 2007 23:32
All right mates, lets get this started. Since coming to Australia a few months ago I think I had enough time to settle a little and get a little more into the Aussie way of life. But, of course, I'll never lose my European attitude and point of view completely. So during the next couple of months I'll talk about some typical Aussie things that I consider as worth talking about. I hope you'll have some fun reading and please let me know what you think about this. Cheers!
