WoW: Cataclysm

December 20th 2010 02:54
I used to play World of Warcraft for a time, but for the last two years my toons have been relegated to the digital limbo that is a lapsed subscription.I have friends that still play, and they have recently attempted to rally me to the cause. I do not share their keenness to invest time and money in the latest expansion.

A friend of mine used to insist that "WoW starts at 60, it's not really a game before that." Later he insisted that it started at 70. Whether or not this was true, the argument did the opposite of what it was intended for me. Why would they make a game that was mostly boring, then turned into fun only after you played through most of the game.

There are sections of the game I enjoyed, but they were far out weighed by the elements that drove me bat shit crazy with boredom.I think the fact that someone recognised a need for a program that played the game for you covers just about everything I ever needed to say about the game. The fact that people actually paid money for it covers all the things I wanted to say. Why don't people just play it themselves? I know the answer.

If I were blizzard I would be concerned that people actually wanted something else to play segments of the game for you. Instead they turn around and get all up and down about it, saying that it's causing people to let their subscriptions lapse. I wonder how many people would let their subscriptions lapse once they actually had to play the game for themselves again. Why not change elements of the gameplay to remove the market for such a program?

It seems to me that Blizzard is somehow emotionally attached to the elements that are so mind numbingly monotonous that it is not only possible to make a program to play the game for you, but also preferable to playing it yourself.
