Should You Write Your Book in First Person Point of View?
December 4th 2008 04:51
When you write in first person you write through the eyes of a single character. This enables the reader to bond with the character.
Some argue that it's easier to write in first person. It's how we naturally speak. Therefore, many beginning writers choose to write in first person.
Writing in first person forces you to keep your character interesting. Nobody wants to read twenty chapters of boring thoughts and actions!
Of course, there are disadvantages to writing in first person. You are limited to just one character's worldview.
You'll need to juggle your pronouns so the reader doesn't repeatedly see "I" (you don't want your story to be a self-portrait).
Also, you can't as easily delve into other character's minds to see how they feel. You'll have to show how those characters feel through dialogue and various other means.
Mark Twain pulled off first person point of view in Huckleberry Finn. Of course, Mark Twain was a brilliant writer. But, with a bit of practice, you can pull off first person writing as well!
