Should You Outline Your Novel?
December 13th 2008 15:11
When you outline your novel, you know where it is headed. You know who your characters are, John and Mary. You know that in Chapter Three, John and Mary will have a fight which will eventually lead to Mary's suicide attempt. You know how your novel will end. John and Mary will reconcile and live happily ever after.
You know this because you planned this. You're writing your novel in thirty days. You need to streamline things!
But, suppose for a minute you lost your outline. Suppose your dog ate it. Or, suppose your husband accidentally fed it to the paper shredder. Suppose you can't remember what you had planned for Chapter Four?
This could be a blessing! Let's now try writing without that outline.
After Mary's suicide attempt, she's hospitalized for depression. She meets a (cute) man in the hospital. He's single! Mary soon forgets about John (except when he's stalking her!). Mary's new man saves Mary from her husband-turned-stalker's murder attempt. Mary and her new man live happily ever after.
Should you outline your novel? You decide!
