Should music be free?

The great debate! They're talking about this on my radio station.
Personally, I think free music is a double-edged blade. On one hand, the band isn't really making that much money off the CDs unless it's U2 or something. But, on the other hand, they're making something.
Now, the one side of the argument was that free music would provide bands with more exposure, which would get more people to go to concerts. You have to admit, only the middlemen make any money off the CDs. I think 10-15% of concert profits at the bigger places go to bands; in smaller places, or when the band goes to a festival, they might make more. Merchandise also makes them more money than CDs, most likely. Her argument is that they can make money off of everything, even ring tones, so let the music be free.
His argument is well CDs make them money.
I'm going to take the middle road over here. Why not have bands put up sample downloads, say 3-5 songs from each album? Then if you like it all, you can go out and buy the CD. Then more bands get tried out. Then we're all happy-and we don't have starving musician syndrome.
What do you think?
