Should India be happy after winning the 1st test against England with 9 wickets? Sehwag getting back to form with a trashing century, Indian opening partnership worth a 100 runs, Yuraj Singh made a great come back with a handy innings in the middle order, Pujara by scoring a double ton trying to fill the shoes of Indian all time great Rahul Dravid, Pragnan ohja taking 9 wickets,Ashwin, Zaheer and Umesh Yadav taking wickets in crucial movements ,forcing England to play follow-on and executed the tactics well with all this positives we fell India should feel happy .
There are quite a few concerns which we have to consider rather than getting carried away with the win in the 1st test .Of all the main concern is the innings of the England skipper Cook. England being a team with a concern of playing on spinning tracks had never had good record in subcontinent but by the innings Cook played with ease and with out any problem facing the Indian spinners on the track that was assisting spin shows the preparation English man did . It is not just Cook, the partnership between Prior and Cook in the second innings tells the story about the effort they put in for the series. Next concern is the EnglandÂs premium spinner Grame Swann ,Indians being known as good batsmen against spin bowling were not been able to withstand to the spin of this England spinner who was awarded by 5 wicket haul in the first test match.
By the nature of the wickets England will start the next test match with Monty Panesar who is a left spin bowler who can bowl a lot of overÂs in a single spell and so Indians will have to face it difficult to score the runs. Another important concern for Indian team is going to be the DhoniÂs truimp card Ravichandran Ashwin who was impressive in the first innings but he had no impact on the English batsmen in the second innings, Cook and Prior read the line and length of Ashwin perfectly and started to play him very well and Ashwin started to bowl flat rather than giving flight and attack for wickets.
Toss is one of the concerns as the pitch started to deteriorate from the 3rd day of the test match which means the team batting first will get a flat track and the team batting second has to face the consequences of the cracks on the pitch. As India won the toss and elected to bat in the first test it was all good and what if India loss the toss later on in this series and if English batsman post a big first innings total in the first innings.
I dint mean that India shouldnÂt be happy for what they have did in the first match ,there are quite a few proud moments for India .Of all that Pujara will the pick of the team because of his class, composure in the innings against England. The way he played the cover drives and the way he scored runÂs on the merit of the ball reminded of Rahul Dravid. In his innings of 200 he has never played any extravagant shot. He was confident in playing both on front and back foot which made bowlers to struggle at him, pick of the English bowlers Grame Swann was not any different to him when compared to other bowlers.
The way Viru and Gauti started the innings with the flurry of boundaries on both the sides of the wicket kept the English bowlers on the back foot in the first hour or so .the way Sehwag continued the innings and scored a 90 ball ton made it really tough for the English bowlers. The way Ohja bowler to KP and dismissed him in both the innings by using the KP's inability to play left arm spin ,shows the game plan of the Indian team .By keeping the fielders around the bat made batsmen pressured and to get rid of them batsmen attacked and gave their wickets away and for this tactic captain deserve to be praised.
India can take a lot of positives from the first test but should not get carried away as this English team has match winners who can change the course of the game in a single session. The Indians should look to solidify more and correct out the errors before the next test in Mumbai
